The starter Pokemon of Legends Z-A are not getting regional forms. However, this makes it more likely that they will end up getting new Mega Evolutions instead. Given this game’s focus on Mega Evolutions, it would appear to be more thematically appropriate.

In the lead-up to Pokemon Legends Z-A, the marketing for the game has gone into overdrive. There have been several mini-trailers featuring famous actors playing the game or getting caught up in the vibe. One of these trailers, starring Stranger Things star Gaten Matarazzo, focuses on him playing the game on a Switch 2, which ends with him Mega Evolving his Greninja.

However, a closer look at his lineup reveals that he has a Meganium in his party. A Meganium that looks exactly the same as it usually does. This pretty much confirms that none of the starters are getting new regional forms. In fact, it seems likely that there may be no new regional forms introduced in the game.

This may be a bit of a long-term loss for this trio of starters. While Mega Evolution is returning in Z-A, it was heavily downplayed and outright removed in past games. As such, any buffs weaker Pokemon like Mawile and Kangaskhan got from their Mega Evolutions, they lost those. However, regional Pokemon like Alolan Ninetales and Galarian Weezing keep what makes them good like alternate typing and Abilities.

Taking another look at Gaten’s party indicates that there may be something special for the starters of Legends Z-A besides regional forms. His entire party, besides Meganium (Greninja, Lucario, Gardevoir, Ampharos, and Charizard), consists of Pokemon that can Mega Evolve. Additionally, in the trailer, he mentions that he has been trying to get a Mega Stone for his Charizard, so he has been doing a lot of Rogue Mega Evolution Battles for it.

So there’s a lot of circumstantial evidence for Meganium and, by extension, the other starters to get new Megas. And if any Pokemon deserve Mega Evolutions, it’s these three starters.
