Learn how to use Steelix in the Pokemon Legends Z-A competitive scene with information about its moveset and nature.

Steelix is a Steel/Ground type first introduced in Generation II as an evolution of Onix. Thanks to its high physical bulk, it has always had a place in the meta as a wall. Then, in Generation VI, it received a Mega Evolution, making it even better. So let’s see how Steelix’s playstyle translates in Legends Z-A.
Best Steelix Moveset in Pokemon Legends Z-A

These are the moves you want to use on your Steelix if you plan on using it in battle.
- Curse
- Heavy Slam
- Earthquake
- Taunt
Steelix’s amazing Defense stat, combined with a useful defensive typing in Steel/Ground, makes it an amazing wall on the physical side. It becomes even better as a Mega, with its physical Attack being more usable than before, while its overall bulk was amazing (75/230/95).
Curse is the best boosting move for Steelix, giving it +1 in Attack and Defense and dropping its Speed by one stage. It learns the move by leveling up at 16. Heavy Slam and Earthquake are excellent STABs for their respective Steel and Ground types. Steelix learns Heavy Slam by level up at 36, while TM069 teaches it Earthquake. Mable gives you the latter as a reward for completing level 34 of her research. Finally, Taunt is useful for stopping physical attackers from setting up with Swords Dance. You can teach the move with TM095, which you pick up in the Lumiose Sewers.

Best Steelix Nature in Pokemon Legends Z-A
Steelix can use a Sassy (+SpD, -Spe) nature. This lets it survive a few more hits on the special side while dropping its Speed, which it doesn’t utilize much. You can buy a Sassy mint from a vendor in Rouge Sector 1.
Steelix Stats and Location

Sadly, Steelix is a trade evolution and needs your Onix to be traded to another player while holding a Metal Coat and then traded back. Onix is only available in Wild Zone 14, while the Metal Coat is a reward from the side missions “Steadfast as Steel” and “A Feather from Skarmory.” However, you can attempt to catch the level 70 Alpha Steelix in Wild Zone 3 that appears in the postgame. It even has Earthquake as an Alpha move.
