In this article, we will learn which Mega Evolution cards from the Pokemon TCG saw the most success at the Milwaukee Regionals.

The Milwaukee Regionals was among the first tournaments where we saw the Mega Evolution expansion of the Pokemon TCG in play since its release. However, out of all the Mega Pokemon cards expected to see usage, Mega Absol ex and Mega Kangaskhan ex were the ones that saw the most play. Additionally, they were both used in the same deck, nicknamed the Mega Absol Box.
Additionally, three of these Mega Absol Box decks made the Top 8, though it was Jackson Ford piloting a Charizard ex and Pidgeot ex deck that won the tournament. So let’s take a look at why Mega Absol ex, with support from Mega Kangaskhan ex, was the dominant Mega Evolution at the Milwaukee Regionals.
Which Cards From Mega Evolution Dominated the Milwaukee Regionals?

Arguably more than any Mega Evolution Pokemon, it was the pair of Solrock and Lunatone serving as a draw engine that saw the most play from the set. This is because this duo works well with existing meta decks like Gholdengo ex and made previously niche decks like Ceruledge ex more successful.
However out of all the Mega Evolution Pokemon, Mega Absol ex and Mega Kangaskhan ex ended up having the highest overall usage.

It is also worth mentioning that Megas overall did relatively poorly against meta staples like Gardevoir ex, Marnie’s Grimmsnarl ex, and Dragapult ex, who continued to have high usage. This seems to be the case, as KOing a Mega Pokemon would lead to the opponent taking three prizes which can be hard to recover from. So the decks based around other Mega Pokemon ended up languishing as a result.
Mega Pokemon Deck | Use % | Win % |
---|---|---|
Mega Absol ex | 2.2 | 59.72 |
Mega Venusaur ex | 1.7 | 38.03 |
Mega Lucario ex | 1.13 | 37.04 |
Mega Manectric ex | 0.83 | 40.74 |
Mega Kangaskhan ex | 0.57 | 46.89 |
Mega Camerupt ex | 0.13 | 19.61 |
Mega Latias ex | 0.09 | 29.17 |

This deck has a more standard Toolbox distribution with different Pokemon and Trainer cards existing to provide a wide variety of roles. Mega Absol ex acts as the main attacker, KOing anything that has six damage counters on it with Terminal Period. However, its second move, Claw of Darkness, deals a solid 200 damage (400 to Gardevoir ex) and lets you pick and discard a card from your opponent’s hand. Mega Kangaskhan ex is more of a support, using its Ability Run Errand to draw two cards when it’s in the Active Spot.
Cornerstone Mask Ogerpon ex acts as a secondary attacker to check Gholdengo ex and Charizard ex thanks to its Ability Cornerstone Stance preventing it from taking damage from Pokemon with Abilities. The other Pokemon are all here for their capability to play a certain role. Budew restricts Item usage, Yveltal prevents switches, Latias ex removes Retreat Cost from all Basic Pokemon, Munkidori helps place damage counters for Terminal Period, Pecharunt ex can switch out a Pokemon, Psyduck stops self-KOing moves, and more.
