Dragon Slayer is one of the main quests in Runescape Dragonwilds. In this mission, you’ll have to track down and slay a dragon named Velgar. However, there are several other things you’ll need to achieve before you can finally unlock the battle with the beast.
In our Dragon Slayer quest walkthrough for Runescape Dragonwilds, we’ll explain how you can complete each stage of this questline, with detailed guidance for every step.
How To Start the Dragon Slayer Quest
To begin this quest, you’ll need to reach the Bramblemead Valley and talk to the Wise Old Man there. You can look for him in the Church in this region. He’ll tell you about the giant poison-spewing dragon in the area, named Velgar, that you’ll need to kill. The quest starts off with the Wise Old Man asking you to bring him some Antlers so that he can start a tracking spell. If you don’t have Antlers in your inventory, go out into the world and kill some deer to find the resource.
When you return to the quest giver with the Antlers, he will ask you to find Cathan. An experienced hunter, Cathan went on a solo mission to bring down Velgar. The wise Old Man will point you towards a castle where you can learn more.

Dragon Slayer Quest Walkthrough for Runescape Dragonwilds
Follow the steps below to see this quest through to completion.
- Step 1: Go to the Castle location pointed out by the Wise Old Man. It’s near the middle portion of the Bramblemead Valley region. At the top of the Castle, you’ll discover a lore object (Cathan’s Journal). Reading it will display the following message on the screen: “The Air Seems Gloom With Dread. Velgar descends upon the Fortress.” Velgar will land nearby and start attacking. Run away from it.
- Step 2: Follow the directions mentioned in Cathan’s Journal to reach the Draagonkin Vault in the Whispering Swamp. Go inside and explore the Vault to find a guy named Spitfoot. He’ll tell you that Cathan betrayed the goblins and left for a place named Gornfell in the Fractured Plains.
- Step 3: Come back and report to the Wise Old Man. He’ll explain that Cathan’s journey to Gornell would suggest that the hunter had discovered some way to fight Velgar. You’ll be asked to follow Cathan’s trail and reach Gornell yourself.
- Step 4: Travel to the Fractured Plains region and head for Velgar’s Tower. Its location will be marked on your map.
- Step 5: Inside the Tower, you’ll face off against a variety of Garou enemies. After defeating them, talk to Cathan’s Ghost to learn how the Garou captured him and then sacrificed him to Velgar. The ghost will also give you the recipe for a Challenge horn, which you’ll need to craft before you can face off against the dragon.
- Step 6: Craft the Challenge Horn using 1x Dragon’s Tooth, 1x Bloodwood Sap, and 5x Bronze Bars. Bloodwood Sap is found only from the Bloodwood Tree in the Bloodblight Swamp region. You can get a Dragon’s Tooth from dragon carcasses lying around in the Stormtouched Highlands. Use an Iron Pickaxe to retrieve this item. Finally, you get Bronze Bars by smelting Tin and Copper ores.
- Step 7: Travel to Velgar’s High location and go all the way to the top. There, place the Challenge Horn on the pedestal to call down the dragon.
- Step 8: Fight and defeat the dragon.
- Step 9: Return to the Wise Old Man to complete the quest. You’ll get a Tome as a reward that will add 500 XP to your Magic, Ranged and Attack skills. Besides that, you also get the Dragonblight Shield blueprint and Dragon Visage crafting material.

Tips To Defeat Velgar
Velgar has three types of attacks that you need to be prepared for when facing the beast. The first is a slam and spike attack. The slam stuns you, and then spikes jut out of the ground to do additional damage. Use the Win shield to cover yourself against these attacks.
Poison meteor is another one of its attacks, where the dragon takes flight and rains down poison rain on you. Dodge out of the way and avoid coming into contact with the toxic puddles that this attack causes on the ground.
Velgar can also unleash its Poison Breath attack that can do severe damage to you if you’re not careful. Make sure you prepare for this by taking Antipoison Potion or Anti-Poison Food. These precautions should minimize the health damage that this particular attack causes.
