At one point in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, you will have to decide whether Emmrich should become a Lich. Becoming a Lich will allow him to tap into a new level of power that he hadn’t seen before.

More changes to his character are noticed in the combat. However, one big thing to note is that becoming a Lich was something that Emmrich Volkarin wanted all his life. The only thing standing in his way is his dead friend, Manfred.

Emmrich’s questline offers a quest called The Sacrifice of Souls. Toward the end, Manfred saves everybody by sacrificing himself. Vokarin can only save his friend if he gives up his lifelong dream of becoming a Lich. So, saving Manfred or becoming a Lich are the two choices you must weigh carefully.

Saving Manfred

If you decide to save Manfred, Emmrich will no longer be able to become a Lich. This will give you access to the next mission in his storyline called Heir to the Dead. He will now call Keepsake of Ages and Farsighted Curio. After speaking a few words for Manfred, he will return to the corpse.

He will gain magic powers like Vokarin and become his apprentice. Whenever you see Manfred, he will be wearing an overcoat now. Emmrich will regret leaving his Lich path behind, but nothing compares to spending time with his dear friend.

This decision will unlock the following skills for Emmrich Volkarin:

  • Life’s Embrace (Veilguard Skill): Your low health threshold will be increased by 10% and the party will deal 50% more damage when you have low health.
  • Graven’s Vestments (Heroic Armor): Whenever you are in low health, detonations cause 50% damage and render you invulnerable.

Becoming a Lich

Letting Emmrich complete his life’s work will make him more satisfied with his life in the long run. He will eventually outlive Rook and the rest of the party due to his immortality. This will also allow Emmrich to help out humanity forever.

If you let him follow his long-running dream, Rook and Emmrich go to a ritual and the latter finally fulfills his destiny. He has a skull face and green eyes now. However, despite his immortal status, he can still return to his human form during conversations. All of this happens during the Will and Testament quest.

He will pay his respects to Manfred, put him to rest forever, and gain the following skills instead:

  • Death’s Caress (Veilguard Skill): Emmrich’s abilities will apply Necrosis to enemies when dealing damage. The party’s damage is also increased by 25%.
  • Lich’s Vestige (Heroic Armor): The Necromancing mage can now deal 131% bonus damage when using abilities during combat. Moreover, he will apply Quietus to a Sundered enemy if they are detonated. And if the detonated enemy already had Quietus or were Sundered, they will receive 200 Necrotic damage instead.

Should You Let Emmrich Become a Lich?

As a friend, the final call depends on you. When you face the decision during The Sacrifice of Souls quest, just remember the consequences we listed out. Your bond with Volkarin wouldn’t be affected much. However, keep in mind the rewards that you receive for each of these quests.

As for us, we found that the Lich path is much more helpful during combat situations, which you will encounter a lot. So, if you also wish to excel in combat, let Emmrich unravel his true destiny and bid Manfred farewell forever.
