Final Fantasy is one of gaming’s oldest and most beloved franchises of all time. It shook up the gaming industry as a whole, as it accomplished things that were considered impossible during the era of the PlayStation 1. Even now, Final Fantasy is a massive name in the gaming landscape.

Although there are many phenomenal entries in the franchise, we will be ranking 5 of our personal favorite Final Fantasy games.

5. Final Fantasy XV

Final Fantasy XV, on launch, was a controversial entry into the franchise. The cancellation of Final Fantasy Versus XIII left a bitter taste in everyone’s mouth, so its eventual rebranding as Final Fantasy XV did not excite most. Unfortunately, the lackluster state of Final Fantasy XV on release did little to help its cause. However, despite it all, it is still a beautiful tale of brotherhood and sacrifice.

We believe it became a complete game after the release of the Royal Edition, which includes new areas and DLCs. All of this new content expands the game’s story by quite a lot, making it a comprehensive and beautiful Final Fantasy tale.

4. Final Fantasy

The real-life impact and legacy of Final Fantasy is easily one of the most inspiring tales in video game history. Back in 1987, Square Enix was facing bankruptcy and had little hope left. Hironobu Sakaguchi gambled everything on what was, back then, their final game. Fittingly naming it Final Fantasy, the game launched to massive commercial and critical success.

This spawned an entire franchise and made Square Enix flourish. The original Final Fantasy’s success paved the way for all of Square Enix’s future games, making its impact undeniable.

3. Final Fantasy VIII

Final Fantasy VIII is a game that is often overlooked by many fans, which is unfortunate. It is a great game full of many great characters, such as Squall, Rinoa, and the iconic Ultimecia, who is easily one of the best Final Fantasy villains. It also introduced the iconic Gunblade, which is one of the most creative and unique weapons ever introduced in a game.

While it was a massive commercial hit, everyone still chooses to put Final Fantasy VII in the spotlight, including Square Enix itself. Final Fantasy VIII also deserves some form of remake love.

2. Final Fantasy VII

Final Fantasy VII is arguably the face of the entire franchise now, which it deserves to be. Back when the original launched, the game’s visuals were considered to be something that wasn’t possible, but Square Enix made it work with sheer creativity. The characters, their designs, and their motives all work spectacularly well together.

Final Fantasy VII did such a great job making those characters feel alive that players formed bonds with them. It is for this reason that the iconic death of Aerith Gainsborough completely shook everyone, making fans grieve to this day.

1. Final Fantasy XIV

While Final Fantasy XIV is an MMO, it is still a true Final Fantasy game at its core. While we could go on and on about the brilliant story, the raids, and how Shadowbringers is so good, the major reason this game is brilliant is that it allows us to make our own Final Fantasy character and interact with others.
