Impaling is a great enchantment if you want to deal extra damage to mobs in Minecraft. Here’s an article on what it does and how to get it.
A Trident is a weapon that you can obtain from killing Drowned and Trial Chambers. However, it does not do much damage at first when you use it. As a weapon of the sea, it should deal extra damage to aquatic creatures, but it doesn’t. To get that extra damage, you have to enhance the Trident with the Impaling enchantment. But how do you get Impaling, and what does it exactly do?
Here’s a guide explaining how you get Impaling and how it works in Minecraft.
How To Get Impaling in Minecraft
Firstly, Impaling is an enchantment that is exclusive to the Trident. This means you cannot enhance any other equipment in Minecraft with Impaling. There are quite a few ways through which you can get Impaling; here are all of them:
- You can get it by enchanting a Trident at the Enchantment Table.
- An Impaling enchantment book can drop from mobs spawned during a raid. You have to combine the book and the Trident in an Anvil.
- Librarian Villagers can sell the Impaling book for emeralds.
- Dungeon chests can sometimes carry Impaling books in them.
- In Bedrock Edition, you can get enchanted books from fishing. Impaling can be one of them, albeit rare.

Function of Impaling in Minecraft
As we said before, Impaling is a Trident-exclusive enchantment. What Impaling does is increase the damage a Trident deals to aquatic mobs by 2.5 for every level of Impaling. The Impaling can go up to a max of Level V, which increases the damage per hit by 12.5, both for melee and thrown hits.
One thing to remember is that Impaling only affects aquatic mobs in Java Edition. In Bedrock Edition, as well as Java Edition Combat Test 4, Impaling affects all mobs that are in contact with water. We recommend using Impaling for killing Elder Guardians, as you can only fight them underwater.
