Who created the Rasengan? Discover its origin, powerful variants, and how Naruto Uzumaki mastered this iconic technique in the Naruto series.
Naruto’s journey from a lonely child to the Hokage of his village involved learning several techniques and jutsus. Among these, none is arguably as iconic as the Rasengan. As a move that spawned several powerful variations, it saved Naruto from numerous life-threatening situations. So, who created the Rasengan in Naruto?
The Rasengan was created by none other than Naruto’s father, Minato Namikaze, in the series. Thus, it was fitting for the technique to be passed on to his son, for whom he sacrificed his life.
What Is the Rasengan?
The Rasengan is a powerful jutsu involving the collection of chakra in one’s hand. The user compresses it to a high degree before spinning it, creating a concentrated force with immense destructive power.
The Rasengan does not require hand signs or additional chakra to maintain once created. However, it is difficult to learn as it requires extraordinarily precise chakra control. Even talented ninjas like Kakashi struggled to master it in Naruto.
When the Rasengan is used, it explodes upon contact, leaving a significant impact. Although initially believed to lack flexibility, Naruto modified and created new versions of the Rasengan adaptable to various situations.
Naruto Uzumaki initially learned this technique to face Sasuke’s Chidori, a lightning chakra-based attack. When they finally fought, Sasuke was shocked by Rasengan’s power, which far exceeded his own technique.
Who Created the Rasengan in Naruto and Why?
The Rasengan was created by Naruto’s father, Minato Namikaze. The origin of the Rasengan was one that showed the compassion of Minato towards his partner, Kushina.
In Naruto: The Whorl Within the Spiral, Minato and his squad barely escape the feared Tailed Beast Bomb during a battle. Inspired by its destructive power, Minato sought to create a similar technique for ninjas. He feared that Kushina might face powerful opponents in war, and he wanted to provide her with a technique strong enough to rival Tailed Beasts and their jinchuriki.
To this end, Minato struggled to stabilize the chakra needed for a Rasengan. However, after a conversation, he realized he needed to spin it in both directions equally. Through his genius and Jiraiya’s unintentional inspiration, the Rasengan was created.
Although it’s unclear if Kushina ever learned the Rasengan, she was the main inspiration behind its existence.
How Did Naruto Learn the Rasengan?
Apart from the Shadow Clone Jutsu, the Rasengan was Naruto’s first major technique. Searching for a way to match his rival Sasuke, Naruto learned about the Rasengan from his mentor, Jiraiya, who had learned it from Naruto’s father and passed it down.
Since the Rasengan was an extremely difficult jutsu, Jiraiya had broken it into three major steps for Naruto: Rotation, Power, and Containment.
Rotation involved Naruto learning how to spin the Chakra in specific directions. To give it a fixed point, he used a water balloon and spun the Chakra in it till it burst.
Finally, the most challenging step was to contain Rasengan’s power as a sphere. Naruto eventually used his Shadow Clones to help refine the chakra, allowing him to master this step. Naruto spent nearly a month training in these steps. Later, during a two-year timeskip, he further refined his control.
Different Varieties of the Rasengan
Over time, Naruto learned to improve on the Rasengan and developed several smart ways to apply it. The varieties of the Rasengan include:
1. Rasengan
The base version was made of a spherical concentration of Chakra being kneaded.
2. Nine-Tails Rasengan
Also known as Vermillion Rasengan, this version was used in Nine-Tails Mode, drawing power from Kurama’s chakra without needing Shadow Clones.
3. Sage Technique Rasengan
This version of the Rasengan was influenced by Naruto’s Sage Technique. It helped to make the technique much more powerful than its base version.
4. Big Rasengans
Naruto discovered that more chakra could increase the Rasengan’s size and potency, leading to Big, Ultra-Big, and Super-Ultra-Ball Rasengans.
5. Wind Release – Rasengan and Rasenshuriken
Naruto had achieved his father’s dream of adding a Chakra Nature to the Rasengan. Through this, the wind energy was added to the Chakra giving the Rasengan a distinctive look. This also allowed Naruto to throw the Rasengan from a distance.
Since the Rasengan could be thrown now, he also went on to develop the Rasenshuriken, which was shuriken-resembling Rasengan. The destructive power of this was very high but also took a toll on Naruto’s body. Hence, he could only properly use it after learning Senjutsu.
6. Sage Art: Magnet Release Rasengan
By combining his Six Paths Mode, Naruto could envelop any target with the Magnet Release technique while leaving them immobile.
7. Vanishing Rasengan
Boruto carried on his father’s legacy of coming up with new Rasengan variants. He came up with the Vanishing Rasengan, which vanished upon release and would appear again right before contact. By adding the Wind Style to this, Boruto was able to catch even the strongest of enemies off-guard.
Every Naruto and Boruto Character Who Can Use the Rasengan
As mentioned earlier, it took a lot of effort and talent to learn the Rasengan in the world of Naruto and Boruto. Nevertheless, there were a few characters who managed to learn the technique. They were:
- Minato Namikaze – Naruto
- Jiraiya – Naruto
- Kakashi Hatake – Naruto
- Naruto Uzumaki – Naruto
- Konohamaru Sarutobi – Naruto: Shippuden
- Boruto Uzumaki – Boruto: Naruto Next Generations
- Koji Kashin – Boruto: Naruto Next Generations
- Momoshiki Otsutsuki – Boruto: Naruto Next Generations
- Hiruko – Naruto Shippuden The Movie: The Will of Fire
- Breeze Dancer – Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Online Video Game
The Rasengan is very important due to the history behind its origin and the significance it holds inside Naruto’s family. With each generation, the jutsu has evolved further while showing the creativity of its user.
As we move on to the Boruto anime where powers far surpassing Naruto are being introduced, we cannot wait to see what new versions of the Rasengan are released.
