The Dragon Age series has always prided itself on its multi-dimensional characters, and Dragon Age: The Veilguard follows suit with some of the best characters in the series. Solas, one of the antagonists in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, is a polarizing figure. Some deem him a misunderstood messiah, and others paint him as a genocidal maniac. Regardless of which side you fall on, the general consensus holds that the Elven mage is unpredictable. After causing a stir in Dragon Age: Inquisition, the Elven mage makes a return in Dragon Age: The Veilguard and is pushing forward with his goal of breaking the Veil. As the events of the game unfold, both Rook and Solas find a common enemy in the Elven gods. Solas seemingly turns a new leaf and decides to join hands with Rook to banish the threat. This leads one to wonder: Will Solas betray you? The answer, unfortunately, is yes. Solas will betray you and break the pact.

Unlikely Allies

As the Elven gods make their plays across, Thedas, Rook, and Solas find themselves between a rock and a hard place and decide to join hands. The two are enemies but are forced into a pact due to a common enemy. Rook is against Solas’ goal of breaking the Veil. To earn Rook’s trust, Solas vows on his pride to leave the Veil intact and abandon his goal. The unlikely allies then join hands to take the fight straight to Ghilan’nain and Elgar’nan, the Elven gods.

An Act of Betrayal

Solas transforms into a giant wolf, takes on Elgar’nan, and defeats him, turning him into a mortal in the process. As the dust settles, the Elven mage then revokes his vow and walks back on his word, betraying Rook and the crew in the process.

Solas wants to break the Veil, merge the mortal and spirit worlds together, and bring about a new world order. You are then given the choice to persuade Solas, trick him, or coerce him into binding himself to the Veil and maintaining him. Your choice determines if Solas is redeemed or is forever tainted as a traitor and tyrant.

Solas is a complex character who believes that he is on a path towards the greater good. The Elven mage joins forces with you but betrays you once the goal is accomplished. He believes that tearing the Veil is necessary to bring a new world order and let the world turn a new leaf.
