Wuchang Fallen Feathers adopts the original Dark Souls 1 level design, and this article explains whether it is truly open world or not.

At its heart, Wuchang Fallen Feathers is an RPG title where you take on the role of Wuchang herself. The game is set in Shu during the Ming Dynasty. This historic setting, along with the element of mythology and fantasy, is already a hit combination. As such, many might wonder whether the game is open world and has extensive exploration.

Wuchang Fallen Feathers is not fully an open world game. It features interconnected regions that you can explore, although in a way that the game wants you to. Traditionally, it does not fulfill all the core factors that define an open world title.

Note: Some parts of this article are subjective and reflect the writer’s opinions.

Why is Wuchang Fallen Feathers Not a Fully Open World Game?

Before we explain why Wuchang Fallen Feathers is not an open world game, let us look at some of the core factors that define this genre:

  • Vast exploration: Open world games allow you to explore the entire map. You can visit every nook and cranny to find secrets, and no restrictions are placed on you, except perhaps the level cap.
  • Dynamic world: Open world games are interactive, where your choices shape the world around.
  • Side content: A major part of open world games are additional content like side quests that you can undertake at a given point.

Wuchang Fallen Feathers does not satisfy any of these factors fully, but does them to a partial extent. When it comes to exploration, your path is set by the game. There are additional routes and secret paths that you can take, but they do not progress the story at all. You need to find these routes, and they can sometimes lead you to interesting items or even optional bosses.

Although there are multiple paths in Wuchang Fallen Feathers, your main objective is still linear.

At the same time, some paths will remain completely blocked, no matter how much your logic dictates that it should not be; a shrub here or a bamboo barricade that your sword cannot take down at all. In some cases, you do find out ways to open some of these paths by going to the opposite side. The freedom to explore is there, but not to the fullest extent. However, to progress the story, you will have to follow a specific path.

When it comes to the dynamic factor, Wuchang Fallen Feathers once again does not fully adhere to the open world formula. You can interact with NPCs, but your choices do not change the world in any major way. Sure, some dialogues might change, and some of the items that you get might change. However, there is nothing more than that. Once again, the path is set in stone and you must follow it.

Finally, side quests and the additional content. Yes, there are some side quests in Wuchang Fallen Feathers, but once again, not in the traditional sense. You will often meet NPCs, either through closed doors or by directly conversing with them. They might tell you to investigate something or fetch some specific item. However, that once again has no major impact on the story.

Wuchang Fallen Feathers is a Semi-Open World

All these factors combined, Wuchang Fallen Feathers can be considered a semi-open world game. At the end of the day, you will explore the world and progress exactly how the developer wants you to. Hence, it cannot be said to be a truly open world game.

On the other hand, it is not a boss-rush game like Black Myth Wukong either. The closest resemblance to Wuchang Fallen Feathers would be perhaps the original Dark Souls 1, where you have organic progress in a partially open world setting.
