Wuchang Fallen Feathers isn’t short of its fair share of convoluted systems, some of which can be quite difficult to understand, even after spending a considerable amount of time playing the game. One such system is Feathering, which ties into the most important element of Wuchang’s combat, Skyborn Might. However, apart from the combat system, Feathering also plays a vital role in Wuchang’s main story progression and is an integral element of the protagonist’s past and present.

Unfortunately, outside of a few tutorial pop-ups, the game doesn’t explain the fundamentals of Feathering and how it affects gameplay. To help with that, here’s a comprehensive guide on Feathering in Wuchang.

Feathering is a supernatural phenomenon, an affliction, that causes inexplicable mutations to the victim, symbolizing a curse that turns the afflicted into a monster, albeit gradually. It’s not unlike the Hollowing and the Hollows from Dark Souls games, albeit with some key differences. Unlike Hollows, those who are afflicted with Feathering do retain their memories, despite their descent into madness. Additionally, Feathering might be a curse, but it’s also the source of supernatural powers, some of which are granted to Wuchang as she progresses through the main story.

In addition to that, Feathering also plays a vital role in Wuchang’s own past and her ties to her siblings. As you traverse the kingdom of Shu, you will come across all manner of grotesque monsters, some of whom used to be humans but have transformed into monstrosities by the Feathering.

The game doesn’t explicitly mention the origins of Feathering right from the get-go. However, as you progress through the story, you will gather hints that help you get a better idea of the curse.

How Does Feathering Affect Combat?

Apart from being a “plot device,” Feathering is also a core stat of Wuchang. It essentially governs two things: the rate of Skyborn Might accumulation and the efficiency of Spells/weapon combos that rely on Skyborn Might. You can upgrade your Feathering stat via the Impetus Repository. Do note that, unlike Magic, which only scales with One-Handed Straight Swords, Feathering applies to all weapons and is a core stat of Wuchang. However, it does not increase the damage output of Spells. The DPS is still governed by Magic or weapon-specific stats and upgrades.
