How to Unlock The Whispering Promise in Baldur’s Gate 3
Here are a few merchants who can sell this ring: Volo, Grat The Trader, Brem, or Roah Moonglow. The easiest to find is Volo in Emerald Grove, while in the conversation with him, pick the trade option from the lower left corner of the dialogue screen to see his wares, where you can buy Whispering Promise.
The second easy option is Roah Moonglow and Grat The Trader; both can be located in the Goblin Camp, as shown in the picture above. To reach the Goblin Camp, head west from Emerald Grove. If you have already eliminated the goblins or they were not friendly, you can also purchase this ring from Brem in Zhentarim Hideout. The entrance to the hideout is at the back of the building in Waukeen’s Rest mansion. However, before Brem opens his shop to you, you must complete the Missing Shipment Quest first.
The Missing Shipment Quest
This quest can start three ways, you can encounter a pack of Gnolls attacking the group of mercenaries in the cave (X:40 Y:626) east of the Risen Road fast travel portal. If you travel from Blighted Village north through the bridge you will find a hurt Hyena and a letter lying on the ground with the title “To the Good Godly Folk of Faerun.” Or you can enter the hideout directly in Waukeen’s Rest and grab the quest. Your next step is to go to the cave location (X:40 Y:626), kill gnolls and save mercenaries.
Defeat the Gnoll
During the fight, you’ll need to defeat a few challenging opponents: Gnoll Flind, Gnoll Hunter, Gnoll Flesh Gnawer, Gnoll Fang of Yeenoghu, and Hyenas. I advise having at least level 3 or 4 before you approach this fight. You want to watch out for the range opponents as they can deal significant damage from far, and kill them first. If you have any type of summons available, or a flaming sphere spell, use it, because there are much more enemies than in your group and some of them can deal significant damage.
The best strategy for this fight is to sneak on the top of the rocky hill just above the cave entrance where gnolls are, and surprise attack them from above. Stay on the hill, and when the melee attackers will try to approach use spells to slow them down like grease and push them off the cliff with a two-handed weapon push attack or Thunderweave Spell.

Talk to Rugan and the Survivors
Once you defeat Gnolls talk to Tugan and his companions. He will ask if anyone survived, you’ll not have good news for him. Choose:
- No. It’s a grim sight.
He will then explain to you that he and his companions were on an expedition and his trip was so far dangerous and troublesome. Respond with:
- Elturgard is quite a distance from here. Where are you headed?
Rugan will nextly explain that they need to deliver the shipment to Baldur’s Gate, but also need to make a stop
- What exactly are you transporting?
And Then:
- You’re Zhentarim. Your people deal in more than just ‘baubles.’
He will be impressed that you recognized them, politely warning you not to interfere. The next dialogue option is crucial. Convince him that you deserve the prize for saving them. If you successfully pass a persuasion check, he will share the location of the Zhentarim Hideout with you, expressing that should you choose to visit, you will be welcomed as a friend. Now all you need to do is head there, claim your quest reward, and gain the ability to trade with Brem.
