Soon after the end of the Chimera Ant Arc in Hunter x Hunter, we are introduced to Beyond, an enigmatic figure in the series. However, since Hunter x Hunter gives depth to even its most minor characters, fans had great expectations for this new addition to the series.
Staying true to this, Beyond has quickly become one of the story’s most impactful and important characters as we head into the Succession Contest Arc. So, who is Beyond in Hunter x Hunter?
Beyond’s surname is Netero, and he is the son of the legendary former chairman of the Hunter Association, Isaac Netero. Let us take a closer look at his character.
Who Is Beyond Netero?
As mentioned above, Beyond is the son of Isaac Netero. While his father focused on strength and humanity’s safety, Beyond was driven by exploration and personal ambition.
At the same time, Beyond’s design and personality both heavily replicate his father. He is charismatic, and confident, and often has a smile on his face. With his natural charm and aura, Beyond can inspire others to believe in his goals.
That being said, there is a darkness inside Beyond that pushes him to take questionable methods to achieve his objectives. While he is undoubtedly very smart and commands loyalty, his actions are often controversial in Hunter x Hunter.
What Is Beyond’s Goal in Hunter x Hunter?
Beyond’s main goal in Hunter x Hunter is to explore the vast mysteries of the Dark Continent. He had gone on an expedition 50 years in the past after not heeding Isaac’s warning. This caused him to fail while losing most of his crew.
Since the Dark Continent holds all kinds of dangers that could threaten the world, Isaac and a coalition of countries called the V5 forbade any sort of contact with it. Following his father’s death against Meruem, Beyond could finally begin working on his plan.
He had been gathering all sorts of talented individuals to join him on his expedition to the Dark Continent. This eventually even leaves the Hunter Association and opposing countries with no choice but to condone and monitor him during his travels.
Is Beyond Netero Evil?
It is too soon in the tale to classify Beyond Netero as good or evil since this would be a disservice to his complexity. However, it has to be said that Beyond Netero is definitely willing to do whatever it takes to reach the Dark Continent.
While he puts up a public persona of being a curious and likable figure, Beyond reveals that he would not hesitate to kill anyone who interferes with him. His most controversial act in the series is how he manipulated the Kakin Empire from the background.
During their period of political struggle, Beyond set up marriages between members of the Kakin military and women who were carrying his children. Over the years, these children have risen to important positions and surround the Kakin princes themselves.
All bearing Beyond’s blood have a cursed seal allowing him to fatally harm them and their surroundings upon activation. While he currently has the support of Kakin royalty under the promise of increasing the King’s influence and power, Beyond clearly has greater plans involving the Empire.
He has shown a great degree of care for the allies surrounding him, and his goal, built on an interest in the unexplored, is certainly fascinating. Nevertheless, all the plans he enforces to get his desired result make him a morally ambiguous figure.
How Strong Is Beyond Netero?
Unlike his father, Beyond did not spend his entire life honing his martial arts and powers. Yet, he still carries the blood of Isaac Netero and is a fearsome character in the series.
We have seen Beyond’s ingenuity in manipulating global superpowers to achieve his ambitious goals. Additionally, he had already been to the Dark Continent in the past and made it back alive. This shows that he is extremely experienced and strong.
Beyond has also marked many children in Hunter x Hunter with his seals and can turn them into sacrifices whenever he desires. This displays his adeptness in using Nen and his creativity in its application.
Since he confidently declared he would crush anyone who tried stopping his journey, we have reason to believe that Beyond is hiding away most of his powers. When these are revealed, the world of Hunter x Hunter is sure to be taken by storm.

Beyond Netero represents humanity’s unquenchable thirst for discovery and progress. Even though it may be a selfish goal that could doom the rest, he refuses to be set back by the barriers of society.
