Discover how to locate Philomeen in Baldur’s Gate 3, uncover her hiding spot, and choose between multiple explosive quest outcomes.
Philomeen is a Deep Gnome you can encounter during the ‘Save the Grymforge Gnomes’ quest in Act 1 of Baldur’s Gate 3. She escapes the cruel clutches of the Duergar and manages to take a Runepowder Barrel with her. As your party ventures into Grymforge, Brithvar mentions Philomeen and the deadly goods she managed to take. Finding Philomeen is optional, but doing so can give you access to the most powerful explosives in the game.
Baldur’s Gate 3: Philomeen Hiding Spot Location
- Head south of the docks where you first arrive in Grymforge.
- Interact with the two Duergar tossing gnome bodies into the water and convince them to let you take over.
- Alternatively, you can kill them.
- Once the Duergar leave, lockpick the large double doors, save the game, and head inside.
- Search the northeast corner of the next room for a button and press it.
- If all perception checks fail, reload the game from the last save and try again.
- Defeat the Ochre Jellies and head up the stairs. Jump across the chasm to the northeast to reach an ornate set of doors on the far side.
- Lockpick the doors and enter to find Philomeen inside.
How To Get the Runepowder Vial From Philomeen
When you enter the chamber, Philomeen will threaten to detonate the Runepowder Barrel if you come any closer. Calm her down using either Persuasion (DC 10), Intimidation (DC 15), or casting Detect Thoughts. If you fail to do so, Philomeen will ignite the Runepowder, killing herself and any of your party members nearby in a fiery explosion.
Once calmed, Philomeen says that she is on a mission to take the Runepowder Barrel to Baldur’s Gate for Gaerdal Ironhand. To fulfill her calling, she is ready to abandon her clan members to their fate. While Philomeen isn’t willing to part with the Runepowder Barrel, she will offer you a Runepowder Vial, which can be thrown and ignited for 5d4 + 18 Force damage.
How To Get the Runepowder Barrel From Philomeen
After accepting the Runepowder Vial, you can steal the Runepowder Barrel from Philomeen using stealth. Have one party member, like Astarion, split from the group and sneak around the room and behind Philomeen. Pick up the Runepowder Barrel and sneak back to the rest of the party. You can also steal the Runepowder Barrel before interacting with Philomeen. During the conversation, switch to another character to pickpocket her for the Runepowder Vial.
If Philomeen notices you stealing the vial, she will become hostile. Killing her isn’t a significant loss, but you won’t see her in Baldur’s Gate during Act 3. The Runepowder Barrel can be used to bring about a quick conclusion to any fight. The barrel explodes in a 59ft (18m) radius, dealing 50-120 Force damage to all entities within range. You can place it at the location of a fight beforehand and create a safe distance, or throw it from a height using your strongest character.
