Learn how to complete the House of Grief quest in Baldur’s Gate 3 and make critical decisions impacting Shadowheart’s storyline.

‘Investigate the House of Grief’ is a side quest in Act 3 of Baldur’s Gate 3 that intersects with Shadowheart’s ‘Daughter of Darkness’ companion storyline. The House of Grief is a hideout for Sharrans in the city of Baldur’s Gate. The party can venture into the underground lair after investigating incidents of citizens losing their memories.
We recommend including Shadowheart in the party before starting the quest, as she has unique interactions with the Sharrans. Jaheira and Minsc also have some interesting dialogue during the mission. These interactions with the Sharrans can lead to one of the most difficult battles in the game, so prepare accordingly.
How To Find the House of Grief in Baldur’s Gate 3

The House of Grief is located on the northwest corner of the Lower City in Baldur’s Gate. While traveling northwest, you’ll arrive at Lady Jannath’s Estate. Cross the bridge north of the estate, and you will arrive at the House of Grief. Before reaching the house, the party will meet Arves, an elderly man who has lost his memory. Offer to investigate the reason behind his amnesia to begin ‘Investigate the House of Grief.’

Enter the House of Grief and climb the stairs to meet the blonde elf, Mirie. Submit to the Mapping of the Heart, and allow Shadowheart to speak with the Inquirer of Grief. After the interaction, pass through the newly opened door and venture deeper into the sanctum.
Inside, the Mother Superior, Viconia DeVir, awaits. She seeks to take the artifact from your possession to destroy the Absolute. Handing over the artifact is not an option, so Viconia attempts to negotiate. Depending on the decisions you’ve made regarding Shadowheart so far, the interaction with Viconia can vary. Options include:
- Replacing Viconia with Shadowheart if she became a Dark Justiciar of Shar in Act 2. The Sharrans become allies in the ‘Gathering Allies’ quest.
- Handing over Shadowheart to Viconia and gaining the Sharrans’ support for ‘Gathering Allies.’
- Refusing to hand over Shadowheart and fighting the Sharrans.
- Succeeding a Persuasion or Intimidation check (DC 20) allows you to avoid a fight.
Resolving the impasse through any of the options will complete the ‘House of Grief’ quest. Note that handing over Shadowheart to the Sharrans for execution or letting them off the hook for robbing people of their memories can lead to a Paladin breaking their oath. Loot the Mother Superior to obtain the Viconia’s Walking Fortress shield.
