If your impulse is to kill everything you run into, Clair Obscur Expedition 33 can be quite punishing in some parts. The game gives you the option to attack these friendly NPCs who don’t initiate the fight. However, killing them might only benefit you in the short term and create bigger problems later.

Portier is one such NPC that you run into while exploring the Esoteric Ruins subregion, accessed from the Old Lumiere part of the map. We suggest not attacking or killing him. In this guide, we’ll explore in greater detail the consequences of attacking and sparing Portier in Clair Obscur Expedition 33.

After you help the mysterious spirit in the Esoteric Ruins to become Portier by completing its quest, you can speak to it again. The Nevron will be friendly in this stage. However, one of the dialogue options is “You must die.” If you choose this option, a battle will begin with Portier, and you’ll need to kill it. While this will give you some loot right now, it will lock you off from a very special reward much later on in the game.

If you spare all of the friendly Nevrons you run into throughout your playthrough (including Portier), you will receive 100x Colour of Lumina from Blanche. You can find Blanche in the Fountain region. You’ll need to defeat the Paintress and unlock Esquie’s flight ability to reach the Fountain region. Our guide explains how you can unlock all Esquie abilities. Once there, talk to Blanche to receive the aforementioned reward.

If you want immediate rewards, you can attack and start a fight with the Nevron. After the battle ends and you defeat Portier, you receive the following rewards from it.

  • 3x Colour of Lumina
  • 1x Polished Chroma Catalyst

This reward isn’t nearly as enticing as sparing the NPC for a grander reward later on. Also, killing Portier or any of the other friendly Nevrons would mean that Blanche would attack you when you reach the Fountain area. The Blanche boss battle is one of the toughest in the game and will require you to be at a high level. Even if you manage to defeat Blanche, you’ll only get 10x Colour of Lumina instead of the 100 you get from going the peaceful route.

If you’re really desperate to earn as many of the Colour of Lumina as possible, you can spare Portier at first, claim the reward from Blanche, and then return to Portier’s location to attack him. This method allows for the maximum gain.
