In the fictional world of Death Stranding, an event known as “The Death Stranding” occurred. It refers to the time when certain places around the globe randomly exploded, disconnecting different countries and civilizations, and leaving everybody “stranded”. The dreadful event then paved the way to The Beach, which is a limbo dimension between the living and the dead. It was only after The Stranding that people developed the DOOMs condition.
The individuals with a bad case of the DOOMs condition show an enhanced connection with The Beach. They also have an innate resistance to Chiral exposure. The latter will affect them, just not as fast as it would people without DOOMs. Moreover, if they get hit by timefall, they will not wither away in that exact moment.
There is no full form of the DOOMs condition mentioned in the series yet. Also, people who have it also get certain superpowers. For example, Sam, the protagonist, can weaponize their blood or other bodily fluids to harm BTs. However, these powers come with a cost. People affected by DOOMs also tend to have some severe sort of mental health issues that manifest in different ways, like how Sam is repulsed by human touch.
Exposure to Chiralium only worsens the condition and mental health of the affected person. Lastly, one thing to note is that since those with DOOMs have a connection with The Beach, they are one of the few people in the world who can take a glimpse at BTs.
