The Dune franchise, known for its rich lore and complex narratives, has captivated audiences for decades, both through Frank Herbert’s iconic novels and their adaptations across various media. Dune: Awakening, an exciting new MMO entry into the Dune universe. It presents an immersive experience that promises to explore familiar and unexplored corners of Arrakis. This article delves into the game’s story and its alternate timeline, offering a fresh perspective on the events that unfold in the vast, desert planet.
What is the Alternate Timeline in Dune Awakening?
The original Dune series, written by Frank Herbert, is set in a far-distant future. Humanity spans the universe and powerful noble houses battle for dominance over the desert planet Arrakis and its invaluable spice. The saga follows Paul, heir to House Atreides, whose rise to power begins after his family is betrayed. Paul ultimately becomes a messianic leader among the native population of Fremen. Under him, conflict sparks a rebellion against the Emperor and other factions. The full series of six books spans multiple generations, exploring the struggles of Paul’s descendants as they contend with the enduring legacy he left behind.
In Dune: Awakening, however, Paul Atreides was never born. Instead, his mother gives birth to a girl. Consequently, his father does not die, and the Atreides House is not destroyed. Moreover, the native Fremen have mysteriously vanished. Therefore, the game presents you with an alternate history of the Dune universe. Here the conflict centers around the struggle for control of Arrakis between Duke Leto Atreides and Baron Vladimir Harkonnen.
How Does This Alternate Timeline Impact the Story?

The lack of Paul Atreides and the Fremen on Arrakis means that no singular house is in control of the desert planet. Consequently, as an ‘offworlder’ dropped onto the desert sands, you face great danger, but also a great opportunity. Your task, as you have been given by a Reverend Mother of the Bene Gesserit, is to discover what happened to the Fremen. This will lead you through a series of trials as you unravel a mystery and grow your own powers.
However, along the way, you’ll also have the opportunity to prove yourself a valuable ally to one of the warring houses. The Atreides and Harkonnen houses will serve as the opposing factions in the game. You’ll be able to do minor work for both in the beginning, but will eventually need to choose a side.
Additionally, the developers at Funcom have teased the idea of there being a third faction which will become known when the game launches. Could this be the mysterious, missing Fremen? If the trials lead you to them, perhaps you might be able to follow a path similar to Paul’s. Other options would include the Space Guild, or even the Imperium itself.
