The Hexblade Warlock is one of the most exciting and powerful new subclasses introduced to Baldur’s Gate 3 with Patch 8. The class is perfectly positioned to use the new Booming Blade cantrip with a Melee caster playstyle. The Hexblade’s power lies in its synergistic subclass features. Let’s look at the first unique feature unlocked by Hexblade warlocks and how it contributes to the subclass’s playstyle.

Hex Warrior is a passive feature exclusive to the Hexblade Warlock subclass. Unlocked at level 1, Hex Warrior grants the warlock proficiency with martial weapons, shields, and medium armor. It also unlocks the Bind Hexed Weapon ability that is central to the warlock’s build.

Hex Warrior Proficiencies

Hex Warrior provides proficiency with medium armor, martial weapons, and shields to lay the foundation for the warlock’s playstyle. Medium armor’s AC ranges from 12 to 17, and a Dexterity modifier up to a maximum of +2 will be added to it. Martial weapons include the majority of weapon types:

  • Flails
  • Morningstars
  • Rapiers
  • Scimitars
  • Greatswords
  • Halberds
  • Mauls
  • Shortswords
  • War Picks
  • Battleaxes
  • Longswords
  • Tridents
  • Warhammers
  • Glaives
  • Greataxes
  • Pikes
  • Hand Crossbows
  • Heavy Crossbows
  • Longbows

Even if the Hexblade Warlock is not proficient with a weapon, using the Bind Hexed Weapon will grant proficiency in that weapon when wielded in the main hand.

Bind Hexed Weapon is a valuable ability at the Hexblade Warlock’s disposal and must be employed to reach its full potential. Using Bind Hexed Weapon will bind the weapon in the main hand into a pact weapon. Here are some key features to know about Bind Hexed Weapon:

  • Costs an Action.
  • Unlocks at Level 1.
  • Lasts until another pact weapon is bound or you move 1.5 m (5ft) away from it.
  • Grants proficiency with the pact weapon.
  • Damage rolls add the Charisma modifier
  • Damage becomes magical and ignores physical resistances.
  • 20% chance to apply Hexblade’s Curse on hit.

Bind Hexed Weapon is incredibly useful since it has a chance to apply Hexblade’s Curse, which in turn provides increased damage, healing, and powerful summons for the warlock.

Hexblade’s Curse marks a target for 10 turns and adds the warlock’s proficiency bonus to their damage rolls against the target. Additionally, the number needed to roll a critical is reduced by 1. When the target dies, the caster regains hit points equal to their warlock level + Charisma modifier. The warlock can also use a reaction to summon an Accursed Spectre when a hexed enemy dies.
