Baldur’s Gate 3 has announced the addition of the Hexblade Warlock along with 11 other new subclasses for its Patch 8 update. The Hexblade has several new abilities exclusive to them, including Accursed Spectre and Hexblade’s Curse.

Accursed Spectre is a reaction used by Hexblade Warlocks that summons the soul of a hexed fallen to fight by their side. The size of the fallen creature determines the power of the spectre being summoned. Let us dive right into the nuances of this new power stemming from the Shadowfell so we can make Wyll the Hexblade of the Frontiers.

Accursed Spectre is a subclass feature for the Hexblade Warlock that is unlocked at level 6. Whenever an enemy affected by Hexblade’s Curse dies, the warlock can cast Accursed Spectre as a reaction to summon their soul as a Feeble Spectre, Mundane Spectre, or Primordial Spectre depending on the enemy’s size.

The spectres are friendly but uncontrollable and attack enemies during your turn using reactions, as well as during their own turns using actions. All the Spectres are ethereal undead, have Darkvision and incorporeal movement. They are immune to necrotic, cold, and poison damage and resistant to (non-magical) physical, acid, fire, thunder, and lightning damage. Once summoned, the spectres will remain on the battlefield for 10 turns.

Feeble Spectre

The Feeble Spectre is an undead that arises from tiny or small enemies when they are targeted by the Accursed Spectre. It can cast Pluck Soul using an action to deal (1d6 + summoner’s Charisma modifier) Necrotic damage and pull the target closer by 5 m or 17 ft.

The target has to make a Constitution saving throw. The Feeble Spectre uses its reaction to target an enemy that its summoner attacks, casting Right Behind You. The spectre will teleport behind the target and deal (1d12 + summoner’s Charisma modifier) Necrotic damage. It has 11 HP and an AC of 12.

Mundane Spectre

The Mundane Spectre spawns from a medium-sized corpse. It is nearly twice as tanky as the Feeble Spectre, with 21 HP and 14 AC. In addition to Pluck Soul and Right Behind You, the Mundane Spectre can cast Devour Soul, using an action and dealing (2d6 + summoner’s Charisma modifier) Necrotic damage and healing the summoner for half of the damage.

Primordial Spectre

A Primordial Spectre is summoned when an Accursed Spectre is cast on a large, huge, or gargantuan corpse. The ethereal undead can use Right Behind You, Devour Soul and a more powerful version of Pluck Soul called Seize Soul, which pulls an enemy over twice the distance.

However, its most powerful attack is Reap Soul, a multi-attack involving its four arms slashing a target with hexed sickles. Each of the four strikes deals 1d8 + 3 slashing damage + summoner’s Charisma modifier. The Primordial Spectre has 33 HP, and an AC of 12.

How Strong is Accursed Spectre in Baldur’s Gate 3

Combined with their access to Booming Blade, the Accursed Spectre makes the Hexblade Warlock extremely powerful. Since the subclass can cast Hexblade’s Curse as a bonus action or potentially apply it with their Hexed Weapon, players can activate Accursed Spectre very early in a fight. That is, unless a spectre isn’t already present in the party from the previous fight.

The Primordial Spectre in particular can deal an egregious amount of damage with each attack buffed by the Warlock’s Charisma modifier. At the same time, it is resistant or immune to almost all attacks the enemy can make against it. Given the Hexblade subclass’s power, developers will likely nerf Accursed Spectre along with Booming Blade following the Patch 8 stress test, altering some of the values above.
