Ghost of Yotei’s combat and exploration may pose a challenge to beginners who are not aware of the mechanics of this series. The combat relies on you having patience to gauge what your enemies are wielding, while exploration will need you to figure out the cues of where you should go.
Fret not, we discuss all that a beginner needs to know in this Deltias Gaming Beginner’s Guide (Tips and Tricks) article.
Ghost Of Yotei Ultimate Guide For Beginners
Do Not Rush Into Completing Main Quests

The main quests are marked in yellow circles with a ginkgo tree in the middle on the map. You should not rush straight through the main missions in Ghost of Yotei. Instead, explore the location you find yourself in, follow the wind, complete side quests, and check out NPCs and their offerings.
These allow you to unlock unique in-game items, including weapons, techniques, and vanity gears. There are plenty of Hot Springs, Altars of Reflection, Bamboo Strikes, and Pillars of the Fallen to be found in Ezo. The first three have practical benefits for the gameplay – Hot Springs increase the Max Health, Bamboo Strikes increase Max Spirit, and Altars of Reflection let you unlock techniques.
Ezo also holds secrets like the Storyteller Myth missions (which include the Jin Sakai easter egg). You will have an easier time tackling the Yotei Six and their army if you have unlocked rewards from such side quests.
Look For Audio Cues, Golden Birds, And Out-of-Place Looking Trees

Ghost of Yotei’s open world is large, filled with various unique points of interest that yield different rewards. While exploring Ezo, pay close attention to if the audio cues suddenly change, if a Golden Bird appears overhead, if there is smoke in the distance, or if you notice an out-of-place looking tree (like a yellow/red leaves tree in the middle of all green). Head towards such points because more often than not, they will hold some PoIs for you to explore/solve.
Take Bounties
In Ghost of Yotei, Bounties are one of the easier sources to gather coins quickly. Head to the Bounty Board in any village, claim the posters, complete the quest, and get rewards from Kojiro. The Bounties are not bland either. Sucker Punch has fleshed them out to give unique characters to the targets you get. The payoff seems well worth it.
Use Your Spyglass
The Spyglass (up on the d-pad) is your friend in Ghost of Yotei when it comes to exploration. If you can get yourself to a high-enough point on the map for a region, you can use the spyglass to scour the landscape. If you point it towards any points of interest, it will register on your map for you to check out later on.
Combat – Block, Dodge, Parry, And Learn

Ghost of Yotei’s combat is more organic and fluid than Ghost of Tsushima, especially with the addition of so many weapons. Nevertheless, learn to pace your fights, especially in the case of bosses. Combat in Ghost of Yotei can be demanding, with one misstep being severely punished.
Know Your Loadout
Pay close attention to the armor and charms you unlock as you progress in Ghost of Yotei. This is something many beginners skip out on, but it can subtly impact your gameplay. Charms and armor have different stats attached to them, which means they can augment/amplify any particular playstyle. Stealth, brazen, or a laid-back exploratory approach – Ghost of Yotei has something for everyone, you just need to find and unlock it.
With the Loadout mechanism, you can also save different loadouts and change them on the go. You can have one loadout to get the most out of exploration, while another to help during combat.
Do Not Blindly Unlock Techniques
There are a lot of techniques to unlock in Ghost of Yotei, and beginners can get overwhelmed which to unlock. There are two things you need to keep in mind: read the descriptions and do not just focus on weapons. There are plenty of categories and they each have something to add to your gameplay. Focus on how you wish to engage in combat or exploration and see which techniques support that the best. Unlocking weapon techniques is important, but should not be the only concern.
Loot, Loot, Loot
Do not forget to loot as you explore Ezo in Ghost of Yotei. Most of the locations have plenty to offer players (like Mt. Yotei), and you should not rush through without checking every nook and cranny. This is also valid when you clear enemy camps. You will get your hands on items like throwable weapons, ammo, and metals.
Traveller’s Map
Isaburo the cartographer sells you Traveller’s Maps in Ghost of Yotei for 50 coins. They need to be placed in the perfect place on the larger map for it to reveal a point of interest. You can also get a Traveller’s Map for free from NPCs (like Settlers walking their horse in the wilderness or a Matsumae soldier near a liberated enemy camp) to a nearby point of interest.
Camps

Setting up camps is one of the recurring aspects of Ghost of Yotei, and our Ghost of Yotei Camp Guide (Cook, NPC Meet, Sleep, and More) to get a grip on it. Camps allow you to regain all Spirits, fast travel to (last updated camp), craft ammo and throwable weapons, interact with NPCs (if they appear), play Shamisen, and skip time.
