Alexander is the local deity of the Corel region and is good for dealing non-elemental damage. This could be good when any enemies you fight don’t have elemental weaknesses to exploit. This huge deity will be a hard fight if you want to obtain him as a Summon, especially if you are unprepared. Read ahead to know how to unlock and defeat this Summon.

To attempt Alexander’s boss fight, you must first reach Chapter 6 (Costa Del Sol) to unlock the Combat Simulator fight from Chadley. It’s likely best to avoid that fight, however. Alexander will be at full power without completing any of his Divine Intel (shrines), and thus, the fight will be significantly harder.

You can wait at least until you get to Corel (chapter 7) so that you gain access to the first Divine Intel associated with Alexander. The final Divine Intel for Alexander will only be available during Chapter 9 when you unlock the second half of the Corel region.

Finishing the Divine Intel is extremely effective for successfully clearing this fight, as each Divine Intel lowers the difficulty of the fight substantially.

Alexander’s HP can range from 38,000 to 55,000 depending on the chosen difficulty. These get cut down to 24,000 and 35,000 (respectively) approximately when all three Divine Intel have been completed. That is a significant bonus no one should miss out on. Using Assess on this legend tells us of its weaknesses, resistances, and immunities.

Alexander is weak to Lightning, however, to compensate for this, he has Greater Resistances to every other Physical or Magical attack. Moreover, he also has Immunities to:

  • Proportional Damage
  • Berserk
  • Deprotect
  • Deshell
  • Debrave
  • Defaith
  • Slow
  • Poison
  • Silence
  • Sleep
  • Stop
  • Stone
  • Petrify
  • Morphable Items

How to Defeat Alexander

Firstly, you should consider finishing all three Divine Intels relating to Alexander as doing each one will significantly lower the difficulty of the challenge. They also have the purpose of strengthening the Summon Materia as soon as you get it. At four stars, Alexander will learn Grand Laser.

Due to Alexander’s Lightning weakness, you should focus on any form of Lightning damage your party can do. Yuffie is great at this purpose, as her Lightning Ninjutsu, combined with Doppelganger can lead to some serious stagger buildup. On top of this, you should also have Ramuh equipped as one of your party members. Ramuh can also land Lightning attacks to further this stagger meter.

The Intel on Alexander gives us some tips on how to battle him. Prioritize attacking his arms. This will swiftly pressure him, resulting in a faster stagger, allowing optimal use of your limit breaks and strongest abilities. If it restores its arms simply target them again to repeat the entire process.

Alexander can affect the surrounding area, so it might get difficult for physical attackers to approach and deal damage. Consequently, you should take a look at your ranged attackers (Aerith, Barret, and Yuffie) and slot them into the party, as required. For this fight, Yuffie and Aerith would likely be more useful due to Doppelganger and Arcane Ward, respectively.

This is not to say that you CANNOT use physical attackers like Cloud. It merely adds an extra layer to the challenge, where you will have to keep fighting in the air, without touching the ground around Alexander whenever it’s affected.

Moves to Avoid

Alexander utilizes the Karma mechanic. Some of its moves accumulate Karma, and the higher this is, the higher its Divine Judgement becomes. Thankfully, there is a way to save yourself. You can cast the Esuna spell to get rid of the karma stacks altogether. Do note that you need a level two Cleansing Materia to cast Esuna.

Divine Judgement is the most powerful attack that Alexander uses against you. This move will do more damage the more karma stacks the character has on them. Therefore, be sure to use Esuna as frequently as possible to remove any chance of dying in one hit.

Following the above steps, you should have Alexander defeated eventually, and you’ll gain him as a Summon.
