Minecraft’s oceans are vast and filled with diverse marine life, coral colonies, and submerged ruins. As you begin your journey in the oceanic world, traversing its surface will require you to craft the humble boat. The boat travels swiftly and has a host of hidden benefits waiting to be discovered.

Boat Crafting Ingredients

To craft a boat in Minecraft, the only ingredient required is wood planks. You’ll need five wooden planks of the same type. These can be oak, spruce, birch, jungle, acacia, cherry, dark oak, and even bamboo. The boat’s color and texture will change depending on the variety of the wood used, but this does not alter its performance.

Here are some features and uses of boats in Minecraft you should know:

  • Two Passengers: Two entities can be seated in a boat at once, which means you can travel in it with a friend!

  • No Hunger: Hunger does not increase while traveling in a boat, making it efficient for long expeditions.

  • No Fall Damage: You do not take fall damage while seated in a boat and can use boats like buckets of water to negate it entirely.

  • Boat with Chest: Combine a boat with a chest on the crafting grid to create a boat with a chest in its rear seating position.

  • Breaks Lily Pads: Gone are the days when lily pads worked like naval mines to destroy your boat. Since Java patch 1.3, boats destroy lily pads when sailing over them.

  • Trading: You can sell your boat for an emerald to a master-level fisherman villager. The type of boat required depends on the biome the village belongs to.
