The release of FromSoftware’s upcoming new title, Elden Ring Nightreign, is right around the corner. However, despite the game getting a dedicated “playtest” as well as multiple media previews, there’s a ton that’s still unclear about FromSoftware’s upcoming souls-like. Unlike Elden Ring and the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, Nightreign is a co-op-focused action RPG, with an emphasis on “co-op.” From its marketing to the closed playtest, the game is primarily showcased as a co-op experience. While FromSoftware’s games did feature co-op and PvP modes in the past (including Elden Ring), those were secondary to the core single-player aspects.

However, in the case of Nightreign, FromSoftware has mostly been showcasing the co-op modes. Naturally, this has left some players wondering whether Nightreign would feature a traditional single-player mode or not. Fortunately, Elden Ring Nightreign will feature a solo mode. However, there are some major caveats to it.

Elden Ring Nightreign Game Modes, Explained

Elden Ring Nightreign features two distinct modes — traditional three-player co-op and solo (single-player). Surprisingly enough, there’s no two-player co-op mode available in the game, at least not at launch. Furthermore, Nightreign also doesn’t feature any PvP modes, akin to Elden Ring’s Invasion or the Colosseum modes. Nightreign is an exclusively co-op experience. Unlike Elden Ring or FromSoftware’s previous “Souls” games, Nightreign doesn’t have a traditional progression system or even an open-world map. Instead, the game features a more scaled-down version of the base game’s Limgrave, called Limveld, where players are dropped at the start of a session.

The map’s scale is somewhat similar to Shadow of the Erdtree’s Land of Shadow. Despite being set within Elden Ring’s world, FromSoftware’s upcoming title works very differently from their past titles. Booting up the game lands you in the hub, i.e., the Roundtable Hold. At the Roundtable Hold, you get to choose your playable character, interact with the NPCs you’ve met in previous sessions, and also check the Codex, which serves as the game’s storytelling medium. Once you’re ready, you can choose to matchmake with other players (Expeditions) and set out for Limveld.

The map of Limveld isn’t static, instead, it’s procedurally generated, akin to games like Remnant and Remnant 2. Every session lands you on a different variation of Limveld, with randomized item drops, bosses, and sights of interest. While you can play the game with a dedicated single-player mode, it’s intended to be played in co-op, with two other players.

Can You Play Elden Ring Nightreign Offline?

While Nightreign is meant to be a co-op-focused experience, this might suggest that it won’t have an offline mode. However, since it does have a solo mode, there’s still a chance that the game will be playable without connecting to the internet. It should be noted that as of writing, FromSoftware has not revealed any details regarding the game’s offline functionality.
