Learn all the permutations and combinations involved in crafting firework rockets in Minecraft and how to use them with this detailed guide.

Fireworks in Minecraft serve a purpose beyond their visual spectacle. While they are the perfect showstopper for a celebration, their use extends to rapid travel with an elytra, and even as weapons when fired from a crossbow. Additionally, more possible permutations and combinations exist in the crafting of firework rockets than in any other item in the game.
Crafting Firework Rockets in Minecraft

At the most basic level, one paper and one to three gunpowders placed in any arrangement on the crafting grid could make the irework rocket:
- Paper (1) + Gunpowder (1-3)
The amount of gunpowder placed can range between one and three for their corresponding level of flight duration. At flight duration level 1 using 1 gunpowder, the rocket will barely clear the height of a house. At flight duration level 3, using 3 gunpowders could result in the rocket resembling real-life firework heights.
Add Explosion to Firework Rockets
The basic variant of the firework crafted with only paper and gunpowder will not explode after reaching its range limit but will simply fizzle out. To add an explosion to your firework, you need to craft it with a firework star.
A firework star can be crafted using gunpowder along with any dye. Up to seven dyes can be placed alongside one gunpowder for the corresponding color effects when a firework crafted from the firework star explodes.
To craft the exploding (small ball) firework rocket, place the following in the crafting grid in any order:
- Firework Star (1-6) + Paper + Gunpowder (1-3)
This is the complete recipe for the firework rocket itself. In order to increase its complexity with additional effects, the firework stars can be customized further.
Add Effects to Firework Rockets

Additional effects can be added to the firework by placing the following items in the grid while crafting a firework star:
- Diamond (Trail) – Adds a sparkling trail to the explosion’s colors.
- Glowstone Dust (Twinkle) – The explosion of colors twinkle before fading, making the crackling sound of an expensive real-life firework.
- Fire Charge (Large Ball) – The explosion radius of the firework increases.
- Gold Nugget – Star-shaped blast
- Any Creature Head – Creeper-shaped blast.
- Feather – Burst effect in the blast.
Here are all the items you can try to fit into the crafting grid in any order while making a firework star:
- Gunpowder + Dye (1-6) + Diamond + Glowstone dust + Fire Charge + Gold Nugget/Creature Head/Feather.
Only one item that affects the fireworks’ shape can be used at a time to craft a single firework rocket. The default shape is a small ball.
How to Launch a Firework Rocket in Minecraft

A firework can be launched by hand, from a dispenser, by using a crossbow, and while flying with an elytra.
Placing it on the Ground
To launch a firework by hand, hold it by selecting it in your hot bar and right-click (use button) the ground. The firework rocket will pass through the player and fly vertically upward until its timer runs out and it explodes. It will also explode if it comes into contact with a solid block.
Dispenser
A firework rocket can be launched from a dispenser by sending Redstone signals or manually triggering it with a lever. You can use Redstone signals and multiple dispensers to create a firework show.
Crossbow
Firework rockets can be loaded into crossbows instead of arrows and fired. A firework rocket will not load automatically from the inventory. Moreover, you must place it in the offhand before pressing the right-click button to load it into the crossbow. To maximize its range, the firework rocket can be crafted with a firework star and three gunpowders. Enchanting the crossbow with Multishot will let you shoot three firework rockets at once while using only one.
Elytra
While gliding with an elytra, fireworks can be invaluable to provide thrust and power your flight. Press right-click while holding a firework rocket to fly in the direction you are facing. However, be sure to use a basic firework rocket that does not contain a firework star, as the explosion can cause serious damage.
