Learn how to start subclassing in The Elder Scrolls Online, mixing class skill lines for deeper character customization.
Update 46 has introduced a plethora of new content to The Elder Scrolls Online, from new quests and locations to core gameplay additions. Released for PC on June 2, 2025, alongside the “Seasons of the Worm Cult Part 1” DLC, the update added the highly anticipated subclassing feature.
Subclassing allows players to choose three skill lines from other classes on one character. This provides vast creative freedom when it comes to experimenting with builds. With over 3,000 skill combinations now possible, subclassing increases character customization to a new degree. However, the feature is not unlocked right away and is accessible only after meeting certain conditions.
Elder Scrolls Online: How To Unlock Subclassing
To unlock subclassing in Elder Scrolls Online, you must reach level 50 with a character, get the “Level 50 Hero” achievement, and complete the “A Study in Discipline” quest. For a new player, reaching level 50 can take anywhere from a couple of days to a couple of weeks, depending on how much they rush. Suffice it to say, it is a considerable milestone in the game.
Once you reach level 50, you will get the “Level 50 Hero” achievement and unlock the “A Study in Discipline” quest. Begin the quest for free via the Crown Store or from the subclassing UI within the Skills menu. Then, speak with Bahtra at-Hunding in the main city of your alliance. She will ask you which discipline you’d like to know more about and give detailed explanations about other classes if questioned.
You will then get the option to “Choose Disciplines: Free.” A subclass menu opens up, and you can choose the class you’d like to acquire. To do so, you must have at least one skill from another class. Select a skill line and replace one of your own with it. Speak with Bahtra again, and the mission is complete.

Subclassing Rules
To equip a new class skill line, you will either need to master that skill line by achieving rank 50 on the skill line’s primary class or subclass a skill line from another class. You can also choose skill lines to subclass through a Respecification Scroll, by talking to Bahtra at-Hunding, or by interacting with a shrine. Once a skill line has been selected for subclassing, you must learn it until reaching 50 and mastering it. You can also add or remove the skill line through respecification.
