The last companion you can recruit doesn’t appear until Act 3, so should you save Minsc in Baldur’s Gate 3?
Baldur’s Gate 3 has many potential companions you can recruit during your adventure, with most first appearing in Act 1, and a couple more you can enlist by the end of Act 2. However, by that point, you most likely have developed a pretty solid active party, with characters you like or classes you find most beneficial. Therefore, companions who don’t join until later on in the game do so at a disadvantage. More often than not they may be left at camp and have little to no interaction with the player. Minsc is a fan-favorite character from the previous Baldur’s Gate games. However, his appearance in Baldur’s Gate 3 does not come until Act 3.
This guide will take a review of how to find Minsc, how to save him, and what are the consequences of doing so. Moreover, is it worth the extra effort to collect this companion? Consequently, this post will contain some major spoilers for Act 3 of Baldur’s Gate 3.
How to Find Minsc in Baldur’s Gate 3
To find Minsc in Baldur’s Gate 3, you will need to make your way into the Lower City in Act 3, speak to Nine Fingers Keene at the Guildhall, visit the Counting House, and then find Minsc in the Sewers. The first step to finding Minsc is visiting the Guildhall to speak to their leader Nine Fingers Keene. You should bring Jaheira along in your party for this conversation because she will have unique dialogue. You will learn about the Stone Lord and Minsc causing trouble, and that she has plans to take him down. She won’t say more, but check out a note on her desk to discover information about an ambush at the Counting House.
Consequently, this will lead you to the Counting House on the south of Baldur’s Gate. Get your hands on a Bank Pass to unlock the way into the vaults. As you make your way down you’ll have to step on plates in front of the High Security Vault door in the correct order (1-3-5-6) to get through. Again, make sure that Jaheira is in your party before continuing.
Next, after the cut scene and fight in the Vaults, look around in the ransacked vault to discover some sewer mud. This will point you in the direction of the Lower City Sewers. The easiest way to get there is by using the secret entrance in the small garden area on the west side of the city. Step on the plates inside to open a secret door that leads down into the Sewers. Minsc and the other conspirators will be nearby, and a shortcut scene will play out before a fight automatically begins. Now, you will have to make the final choice on whether you want to save Minsc or not.
Choosing to Save Minsc in Baldur’s Gate 3
To save Minsc in Baldur’s Gate 3, you will have to complete these requirements:
- Must have successfully recruited Jaheira in Act 2.
- Jaheira must be in your party before confronting Minsc in the Sewers.
- During the fight with Minsc you must knock him out with a non-lethal blow.
- Insist that the Emperor extend his protection from the tadpoles to Minsc.
Having Jaheira as a member of your active party is a necessity for saving Minsc. Without her presence, even if you try to knock Minsc out with a non-lethal hit you will still be forced to kill him. Furthermore, even if you have Jaheira, you must then be very careful to only hit Minsc with a non-lethal blow when his HP is low. If you accidentally kill him, then Jaheira will immediately leave your party for good.
Finally, in the cut scene after the fight, as an unconscious Minsc wakes up, you will have to convince the Emperor to extend his protection to the Ranger. If you do not, then Minsc will remain under the tadpole’s control. However, the Emperor sees Minsc as useless to your ultimate goal and consequently will not want to do so. You will have to insist that he do so over the course of three lines of dialogue.
Consequences of Saving Minsc in BG3
The major consequence of saving Minsc is that he will officially join your party in Baldur’s Gate 3. Furthermore, Minsc is a Hunter Ranger (though we recommend rerolling him to a Gloom Stalker Ranger) with a Folk Hero background. He may not seem like an obvious choice to add to your established party so late in the game, but you should give him a chance, especially if you are lacking a ranged damage dealer.
Additionally, putting both Jaheira and Minsc in your party while you are exploring the city of Baldur’s Gate can lead to a lot of really interesting dialogue and interactions. Both of these companions have a lot of memories of the city and their commentary can be fun and enlightening.
While you’re out and about in the city with them, be sure to also stop at Elerrathin’s Home. Despite the potentially misleading name, this location on the west side of the city is the home of Jaheira and her wards. Visit for a lot of fun family interaction, along with the discovery of a secret basement where you can find Belm and other unique items.
However, Minsc cannot be romanced, so whether or not you recruit him will have no bearing on any romantic relationship.
Additional Minsc and Jaheira Scene at Murder Tribunal
There is also a major main quest story beat that can alter if you have Jaheira and Minsc with you at the Murder Tribunal. This takes place as part of your search for Orin the Red. Within the Tribunal you will come face to face with Sarevok Anchev, a former antagonist of the original Baldur’s Gate. Consequently, he, Jaheira, and Minsc will have a history together and will recognize each other.
Sarevok will declare them traitors and you will have to choose to either kill them to satisfy the Tribunal, pass a dialogue check to make your companions kneel, or defy the Tribunal and fight.
Finally, you must have both Jaheira and Minsc in the party to experience this scene. If you have only one or the other, Sarevok simply becomes hostile and you will have to fight.
