Assassin’s Creed Shadows is the new action RPG developed by Ubisoft. It comes with many main missions, side missions, and optional objectives. The optional objectives are divided among various regions, but some of them offer rewards that are useful throughout the entire game.

The developers have confirmed that one of these objectives will be the Sumi-e, which is exclusive to Assassin’s Creed Shadows and will be a part of the progression system. So in this article, we will tell you everything you need to know about the Sumi-e in detail.

Sumi-e generally refers to Japanese monochromatic ink paintings with themes of nature or philosophy. The simple and minimalistic brushstrokes make these paintings quite striking.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows features a Shinobi and a Samurai, and it is set in Feudal Japan. More specifically, Japan during the end of the Sengoku Period. Ubisoft has always prided itself on the historical accuracy and representation of different cultures in its games. So naturally, we can see why the developers included the Sumi-e as an optional objective in the game.

However, the Sumi-e in Assassin’s Creed Shadows is not just for artistic expression or the practice of philosophy. It also intertwines with the game’s progression system and other mechanics.

But before we get into that, let’s talk about how the Sumi-e works in Shadows. In the game, most of the Sumi-e objectives will be centered around various wildlife. You will find different animals randomly while exploring the many regions on the map. When you encounter them, you will see an Observe prompt above their head. When you press the button, it will turn into a circle.

You will then need to quietly get close to the animal. If you are too hasty or make too much noise, it will run away. When you’re close enough, the circle will then again turn into the Observe prompt. Once you click the designated button, a short cutscene will trigger, where Naoe will draw the animal in the Sumi-e style.

You can do this objective with either of the two protagonists. But, since it requires some sneaking around. Yasuke, with his heavy armor and stature, suffers quite a bit while Naoe does it easily.

After the cutscene, the objective will be complete, and you will gain some rewards and XP. These rewards, most of the time, include unlocking the painting as a wall decoration. However, you will also be able to place the living animal in your hideout from the layout menu.
