The Onryo Samurai is the second main quest in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, where you play as Naoe. The mission starts right after Naoe wakes up at Tomiko’s Homestead. The goal of this mission is to reclaim the box taken by the samurai in the Fight of Kakushiba mission.

In the previous mission’s last cutscene, Tomiko asks to take a look at the Onryo mask dropped by the samurai. She recognizes it and informs Naoe to go to Katano Castle, where the samurai is currently located. With this information, Naoe heads out to retrieve the box Nagato so desperately wishes to protect. Here’s a simple walkthrough to guide you through The Onryo Samurai main quest in Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

As you approach the castle, you will see that the entrance is well-guarded by soldiers, with the gate shut. You have to climb up the walls on the right side of the entrance to enter the castle. There is a blue marker on top of the right tower that you need to grapple and climb. From here, you have a good view of the whole inside of the castle.

There is a pile of hay right beneath, which you need to jump into. These types of hay stacks are found all over the world, softening your fall and acting as a hiding place from enemies. Naoe can even assassinate people while in these hay stacks to hide the body in the hay. As you make the jump, the game tells you about Observe and Intuition.

As we said before, Observe can be used to mark enemies with white arrows, and Intuition allows you to spot things around you through physical barriers. Items and objects are denoted by different colors, and here is what each of them means:

  • Blue: Any pulsing blue is your current objective.
  • Red: Enemies become red when seen through walls,
  • White: These are points of interest in the area.
  • Gold: These are items and resources scattered around the area.

Now that you have an understanding of Intuition, here’s how you can use it to navigate the castle in The Onryo Samurai quest in Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

Jump down into the hay and assassinate the archer in front of you. Then, loot the box beside him to get a few kunai. These are useful throwable objects with multiple uses in the game. Throw a kunai at the soldier down below to finish him. Not all enemies can be killed like this; some enemies have higher health, making it impossible to kill them with a single kunai.

Use your Intuition to check where the blue marker is—that is the location of the samurai you are looking for. Climb up the walls and onto the roof to grapple across using the trees. Try not to fall, as many soldiers are patrolling around the castle. There is no set path that you need to take as long as you reach the marker. If you do face anyone in battle, there are healing items scattered around to help you out.

Use tall grass to prone or crouch to stay out of enemy sight. Additionally, you can use kunai to break any light source by throwing it at one from afar. This creates areas void of light, where enemies have a hard time spotting you.

Assassinating Your Targets in the Onyro Samurai Quest

The first target you need to assassinate is on a stone wall, where your blue marker is. This is an ordinary soldier guarding the location you need to be at. Get on the higher wall behind him to easily assassinate him from above. Then, perch on the wooden rod in front of you to find your main target. On the wooden perch, observe the enemies in the courtyard to identify Ido Yoshihiro, the Onryo Samurai.

Grapple on top of him, and you will get the assassinate prompt right at the apex of the swing. Press the button at the right time, and Naoe drops down to kill him in one hit. A cutscene starts, showing Naoe taking the box from him. However, she is spotted in the process, and the castle bell starts to toll, alerting everyone to Naoe.

We do not recommend fighting here, as there are way too many enemies to take on right now. Use the compass dial on top of the screen and run towards the east. Parkour and swing over any barriers and buildings in your way until you reach the outer walls of the castle. Jump into the water to avoid taking damage and swim towards land. Then, run in the opposite direction of the castle to trigger the final cutscene of the mission.

After the events in the cutscene, Naoe wakes up in an unknown place, marking the end of The Onryo Samurai main quest in Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
