Here are our picks for the five best substories in Yakuza games!

Yakuza games always come packed with amazing side content, and that includes the famous substories. These are practically side missions that are supposed to take your attention away from the main story, which keeps things fresh. However, these sub-stories sometimes end up being so fun when the writing is done well. Thankfully, the series has some amazing substories that players should not miss out on.
We have created a list of some amazing substories from the Yakuza games that you should absolutely attempt in your playthrough.
1) Ringleader Roundup

This is one of the funniest substories in the series, and it is encountered in Yakuza: Like a Dragon. Ichiban, a former Yakuza, has to face different circus animals in battle. Yeah, you heard that right. You will take on wildlife in the heart of Yokohama, and Ichiban’s reactions are something you should look forward to.
There is a fight against a chimpanzee where the animal takes control of a literal train. The storyline in this substory doesn’t make a lot of sense, but that is the fun of it. And the best thing about this substory is that it makes a comeback in future games. That includes Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth and Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii.
2) Crawfish Caper

The Crawfish Caper substory is another side quest in Yakuza: Like a Dragon. This one, however, is anything but funny. It has one of the most emotional storylines in the series. It’s amazing how the developers managed to create something so touching by using something as simple as a crawfish.
The story revolves around Ichiban saving a crawfish known as Nancy. This leads to the creation of a bond between this animal and the protagonist. The rescue mission itself puts a tear in your eyes, and by the end, these become the tears of joy. You should definitely do this substory because Nancy actually makes an appearance in the main story of Infinite Wealth.
3) Oh No! It’s Ono Michio!

Ono Michio has basically become the mascot of RGG games after his legendary introduction in a substory in Yakuza 6. It is a really fun side quest where Kiryu has to wear the clothes of the mascot and act like Ono Michio. What’s amazing about this side quest is that Ono Michio makes an appearance in future RGG titles as well.
That not only includes the Yakuza games but also the Judgment titles as well. Ono Michio plays a big role in the substories of those games as well and even appears as a boss in Infinite Wealth. In substories, you’re often tasked with wearing the clothes of Ono Michio and tasked to act like him, which creates some good moments in these games.
4) Be My Baby

This is another amusing substory with characters that have multiple appearances throughout different Yakuza games. You literally interact with adults dressed up like babies, and they’re actually part of a Yakuza family. It is actually the Gondawara family, and although they don’t play a major role in the main story, they are perfect for casting into substories.
Yakuza Kiwami 2, for example, features them in a really funny side quest. Whereas Infinite Wealth includes the Gondawara family in a really emotional substory. Their appearance in any Yakuza game is always surprising for fans. And you always end up wondering how the substory, including these characters, is going to end.
5) How To Train Your Dominatrix

Yes, that is the actual name of this substory, and it is found in Yakuza 0. Kiryu ends up training a Dominatrix in the ways of inflicting pain on her customers. You’ll be laughing through the entirety of this side quest.
It even includes a situation where Kiryu ends up getting spotted by children when he is training the Dominatrix. Overall, you’re really going to enjoy your time with this substory, and there is nothing but laughs in this one.
