As Pokemon GO heads into 2025 with Dual Destiny, relive the game’s top highlights of 2024 – Dynamax, GO Fest, and more.

2024 was an exciting year for Pokemon GO players. It featured the much-awaited Dynamax and Gigantamax mechanics, debuts of powerful Pokemon, and an all-new event called GO: Wild Area.
As the Dual Destiny season takes us into 2025, Pokemon GO fans are gearing up for even more excitement with the GO Tour: Unova – Global set to close the season in style. But before we look ahead, let’s take some time to reflect on the six best moments for Pokemon GO this year.
The 6 Best Pokemon GO Highlights From 2024
1. GO Tour 2024: Origin Forme Dialga and Palkia Release

Headliners Origin Forme Dialga and Palkia made their grand debut in February’s GO Tour: Sinnoh – Global. These iconic Gods of Time and Space were introduced with their signature moves, Roar of Time and Spacial Rend, along with a brand-new mechanic called Adventure Effects.
While Roar of Time pauses the effects of timed items like Lucky Eggs and Incenses for 6 minutes, Spacial Rend increases the encounter circle for 10 minutes.
Their arrival also shook up the Master League meta, as their moves made them top contenders in competitive battles. Other Sinnoh Legends and Mythicals, like the Shiny forms of Shaymin, the Lake Trio, and the original Legendary Giants, joined the celebration.
2. Dusk Mane and Dawn Wings Necrozma Debut in GO Fest 2024

GO Fest 2024 featured the long-awaited arrival of Necrozma’s Dusk Mane and Dawn Wings Forms. Trainers battled the fused forms to catch the Prism Pokemon in Raids, which was also awarded Fusion Energy. This energy allowed Necrozma to combine with either Solgaleo or Lunala to take the form of Dusk Mane Necrozma or Dawn Wings Necrozma, respectively.
Both forms also came with their signature moves, Sunsteel Strike and Moongeist Beam, each having Adventure Effects as well.
GO Fest 2024 also marked the global release of Marshadow through Paid Special Research and Shiny debuts for Ultra Beasts like Buzzwole, Pheromosa, and Xurkitree.

3. Introduction of Dynamax and Gigantamax

In September, Pokemon GO introduced the long-awaited Dynamax and Gigantamax with the Max Out update. These supersized Pokemon appear at Power Spots, which are new points of interest on the map. Trainers collect Max Particles to participate in Max Battles, which unlock Dynamax and Gigantamax encounters.
The Kanto starters were the first to get their Gigantamax forms, with Pokemon like Toxtricity and Lapras following suit. The initial launch did receive mixed feedback; however, players hope Niantic can refine the feature in 2025 with new effects and mechanics.
4. Pokemon GO Wild Area 2024

The GO Wild Area is a brand-new event that will likely be a mainstay like the GO Fest and GO Tour. The event introduced Mighty Pokemon, which are high-level creatures with at least 13/13/13 base IVs and a high chance of being Shiny. These Pokemon have low catch rates but can be easily captured with a special new item, the Safari Ball.
One of the year’s biggest highlights, this packed event also saw the return of Origin Forme Dialga and Palkia alongside Primal Groudon and Kyogre.
The Toxel line debuted in the game for the first time. While Toxel was locked behind Eggs, Toxtricity forms starred in Max Battles and Raids. Fun Costume Pokemon like Rockstar Pikachu and Snorlax also made an appearance.
5. Pokemon Championships 2024

The annual Pokemon Championships host various events where players compete across different Pokemon games like the main series games, the TCG, and Pokemon GO. The 2024 Honolulu Championship featured events focusing on PvP-relevant Pokemon.
Shiny Mienfoo with High Jump Kick, along with Scuba Pikachu, were the new Pokemon introduced in this event.

6. Raid Days

With three Mega Pokemon, Heracross, Lucario, and Mawile, making their debuts this year, 2024 Raid Days proved to be some of the best yet. Two new Regional forms, Hisuian Typhlosion, and Decidueye, were also introduced for the first time through this format.
Raid Days are special events like Community Days where a Pokemon is featured for 3 hours in Raids. Creatures caught during these events have very high chances of being Shiny.
December’s Necrozma Fusion Raid Day saw the return of Dawn Wings and Dusk Mane Necrozma and received high praise from fans.
