Taking a look at Eida and Kawaki’s relationship in the Boruto series and understanding its effect on them and the plot
The Boruto: Two Blue Vortex manga has been an absolute rollercoaster of a ride so far. Plenty of characters have shown considerable improvement in their ability to fight. The story has reached the business end, and therefore, it’s hard for the characters to explore romantic interests. That being said, Eida and Kawaki’s relationship has been the topic of discussion among fans.
Prior to the Boruto: Two Blue Vortex manga, Eida and Kawaki’s relationship got a lot of traction among fans. Eida had a very specific intention when coming to Konohagakure, and it was to explore a potential romantic relationship with Kawaki. She had strong feelings for him, and this was shown at various junctures of the manga series. However, things have changed drastically since she last expressed her interest in Kawaki.
Not only did it have an effect on the characters as individuals, but it also affected the trajectory of the plot. To the keen observer, Eida and Kawaki’s relationship was quite one-sided. Let’s take a closer look at their relationship, analyze the nature of it, and derive the effects it had on them as well as the plot as a whole.
The Nature of Eida and Kawaki’s Relationship in Boruto: Two Blue Vortex
Manga readers know that Eida has a unique ability – to charm any man she wants. However, this does not affect the Otustuskis. Given the nature of her ability, it’s quite hard for her to find a real relationship. Since Kawaki and Boruto were unaffected by her ability, she developed a rather unhealthy infatuation with these two. However, she tends to lean towards Kawaki, and it’s clear that his appearance plays a major role.
It’s clear that Eida is in “love” with Kawaki for his looks and the way he carries himself. However, can we really call it love? No, Eida was infatuated with Kawaki. To make matters worse, Kawaki didn’t reciprocate any of it. The lack of interest from Kawaki’s end could have amplified her infatuation. The reason for this assumption is that Eida never really had to try in order to charm a guy. In this case, she wasn’t getting the usual response from a boy she was attracted to.
The bottom line is that it’s hard to even call what they had a “relationship.” Any relationship, let alone romantic, involves some amount of effort from both parties. This was clearly one-sided, and Eida was too blinded by her own infatuation to understand the truth behind their dynamics.
Reason for the Downfall of Their Relationship
The biggest reason for the downfall of their relationship is how one-sided it was. Eida’s infatuation was quite strong, and this prevented her from seeing how uninterested Kawaki was. Eida should have identified Kawaki’s lack of interest. However, she continued to develop feelings for him while he ended up using her abilities for his own gain. This happened when the entire village was trying to hunt him down. The village assumed that Kawaki was responsible for Naruto and Hinata’s death. However, only a handful of people knew the truth.
Kawaki was desperate, and he asked Eida to help him. She liked him so much that her desires manifested into reality. Her Omnipotence was triggered, swapping Kawaki and Boruto’s places. When this happened, Kawaki fled from the scene. She realized that she put Kawaki on a pedestal, and he is no longer the man that she thought he was. This completely changed her perception of Kawaki, which was evident in her interaction with Sasuke and Boruto.
The foundation of their “relationship” was anything but solid. Things only got worse as time progressed. However, the final nail in the coffin was when Eida helped Kawaki. That particular event sealed the deal for the two, opening Eida’s eyes for the first time.
The Effect of the Eida-Kawaki Dynamics on the Trajectory of the Plot
It’s quite clear that Eida and Kawaki’s relationship played a role in how the plot progressed. As mentioned earlier, Eida’s Omnipotence was one of the biggest plot points before the Boruto: Two Blue Vortex manga began. If Eida hadn’t developed such strong feelings for Kawaki, she wouldn’t have helped him. This would have forced Kawaki to flee the village. However, he didn’t have someone like Sasuke to help him escape. Therefore, Kawaki would have been caught at some point or the other.
Since the places wouldn’t have been switched, Sarada might not have unlocked her Mangekyou Sharingan. This in turn would have set her up as a mere damsel in distress, which isn’t all that different from her current role. At this point, however, fans are praying that the writers treat her well and give her the platform to shine as an Uchiha prodigy. Furthermore, we wouldn’t be able to see Shikamaru navigate through the political hurdles while juggling between his role as a friend and his role as a Hokage. Eida and Kawaki’s relationship had a ripple effect and therefore heavily influenced the direction in which the plot headed.
Conclusion
There is no doubt that Eida and Kawaki’s relationship was bound to crash and burn from the very start. If there isn’t reciprocation from one of the two parties, it isn’t even a relationship to begin with. Eida finally understood the nature of their so-called relationship. It changed Eida’s perception of Kawaki. Furthermore, Kawaki ended up treating her like a tool to achieve his goal. Not only did it affect them as individuals, but it also affected the plot’s direction, as highlighted above.
Their relationship not only toppled Eida’s potential romantic relationship but it also negatively affected Boruto, who was blamed for the death of his own father. Despite everything that happened, Boruto managed to keep this a secret and didn’t reveal it to the village elders even though he had the chance. It will be interesting to see just how far their relationship will affect the overarching story.
