Everything you need to know about using the Slinger in Monster Hunter Wilds, including its origin, combat abilities, and more.
The Slinger in Monster Hunter Wilds might look like a neat gimmick to some players, but it has a very significant role in combat and even traversal. First introduced in Monster Hunter World, the Slinger is essentially a gathering tool, that can also be repurposed into a combat tool.
In base Monster Hunter World, the Slinger essentially allowed players to load up ammunition (Slinger Ammo) with elemental properties to throw them at monsters. The Slinger also served as the tool that allowed hunters to use resources like Flashpods, Tranq Bombs, and Dragon Pods. The use of the Slinger in base Monster Hunter World was extremely limited. However, with the Icenborne expansion, Capcom massively overhauled the Slinger’s combat abilities.
In Iceborne, not only is the Slinger capable of dealing damage via Slinger Ammo, but it can also actively deal damage to monsters by grabbing onto them. The “Tenderise” mechanic heavily used the Slinger. In Monster Hunter Wilds, the Slinger makes a return. However, its abilities as well as combat utility have been tweaked a bit for the new title. Here’s everything you need to know about the Slinger in Monster Hunter Wilds.
Note: This is an in-progress article, and we will add more information to it once Monster Hunter Wilds comes out.
What Is the Slinger in Monster Hunter Wilds?
The Slinger in Monster Hunter Wilds serves the same purpose as it did in Monster Hunter World. However, it doesn’t have the active combat abilities that Capcom added in Iceborne. Essentially, in Monster Hunter Wilds, the Slinger is once again reduced to passive combat abilities. You can use the Slinger to gather and chuck elemental ammunition toward monsters.
Furthermore, the Slinger can also be used to trigger environmental hazards, aka traps. If you’ve played Monster Hunter World’s base game, you will find the Slinger in Monster Hunter Wilds almost identical. The only big difference between the new Slinger and the one in Monster Hunter World is that in Monster Hunter Wilds, you can use the tool to gather resources.
While traversing the open-world biomes of Monster Hunter Wilds on the Sekhret, you can use the Slinger to gather resources on the fly. This basically speeds up the resource-gathering process and also lets you be mobile while loading your Slinger with ammunition.
Unfortunately, “clutch claw grabs” and “wall bangs” using the Slinger aren’t a thing in Monster Hunter Wilds. However, as an alternative to that, Capcom has added the Focus Mode. The Focus Mode doesn’t use the Slinger, but it does help deal additional damage and create wounds on the monster, similar to the clutch claw’s grab and tenderize abilities.
How To Use the Slinger in Monster Hunter Wilds?
Controls for the Slinger in Monster Hunter Wilds are also identical to those of Monster Hunter World. To aim the Slinger, you need to press L2 or LT. Pressing the Left Trigger triggers the Focus Mode. From there, you can press R2 or RT to fire the Slinger. If you aim the Slinger at a gathering point, it will collect the resource and auto-reload.
However, if the Slinger is already loaded, firing the Slinger at a monster will unload the ammunition on it. Do note that while in Focus Mode (L2/LT), pressing R1 or RB will initiate a Focus Strike, canceling the Slinger function. Make sure you don’t accidentally press R1 or RB while in Focus Mode if you want to use the Slinger instead. You can also manually reload the Slinger.
To do so, simply select the type of ammunition you want to use from the Tools Pouch. Once you have selected the ammunition, simply press the Square or X Button to reload the Slinger manually. We highly recommend using the Training Arena to test out the Slinger’s functionalities before heading out into the open world and for hunts.
