What happened to Kurama in Boruto? Taking a look at the Nine-Tailed Beast’s fate in the Kishimoto and Ikemoto’s manga series.
Kurama is one of the most beloved characters in the Naruto franchise. People weren’t particularly fond of him at first. After all, he was the reason Minato and Kushina died. They died protecting their newborn child from the Tailed Beast. They did so by sealing Kurama into Naruto which required the sacrifice of their own lives. Therefore, he wasn’t particularly popular with the fanbase.
However, their opinions changed as Naruto grew with the Tailed Beast. There was mutual respect between these two beings, and it was shown even in the Boruto series. In fact, Kurama played an important role early in the Boruto series when it was receiving negative attention. He was one of the few reasons why fans continued watching the sequel series.
However, things haven’t been great for this character in the sequel. He suffered from an extremely terrible fate that shook the entire animanga community. Those who have watched the Boruto anime will know that he sacrificed himself in order to help Naruto seal the victory against Isshiki Otsutsuki in the manga. This was one of the most important plot points in the anime.
Let’s take a closer look at what happened to Kurama and why he was forced to sacrifice himself during that fight.
Why did Kurama Sacrifice His Life in the Boruto Series?
Isshiki Otsutsuki threatened Konohagakure and the entire human race. He was extremely powerful and even the Hokage was unable to thwart him. Kurama realized that he needed to bring out Naruto’s true potential with a new transformation. He didn’t tell Naruto about it since it would mean the sacrifice of his life. However, Naruto was ready to put his life on the line if it meant that his loved ones could be safe. The show revealed the transformation – Baryon Mode.
This fuses Naruto and Kurama’s chakra in a manner that can be compared to nuclear fusion. Therefore, the resulting force is exceptionally high. However, the drawback is that it completely exhausts the chakra, which kills the user. In this case, however, Kurama ensured that his chakra was used completely. He wanted Naruto to live on and protect the village. This is why Kurama died in the Boruto manga series.
Fortunately, Kurama’s sacrifice didn’t go in vain as Naruto managed to defeat Isshiki with relative ease. Once Naruto underwent this transformation, it became a one-sided beatdown rather than a fight. The Hokage took down Isshiki and the village was safe once again.
However, Kurama slowly faded away and bid adieu to Naruto. This was an emotional moment for all fans as they watched Naruto grow up with Kurama and become one of the strongest shinobis to have ever existed.
Why Did Kishimoto Kill Kurama in Boruto?
Fans were shocked and they wanted to know why the writers took this decision. The original series had a recurring theme – the strength of the next generation. The likes of Kakashi Hatake believed that the future generation would surpass the current one. The sequel is about Boruto and therefore, his generation will eventually outdo the current one.
Writers of the series wanted to mark a point in the manga wherein the future generation would slowly take the mantle. Reducing Naruto’s strength was one way to go about this. Furthermore, this explanation also fits Sasuke’s loss of his Rinnegan. Sasuke is arguably the strongest Uchiha member to have ever lived.
Therefore, the writers chose to remove Sasuke’s Rinnegan to make him weaker. This is probably why Kishimoto and Ikemoto wanted to kill Kurama in the series. However, fans will be pleased to know that Kurama isn’t particularly dead.
Is Kurama Truly Dead in Boruto?
No, Kurama isn’t dead in the Boruto series. He will reincarnate at some point because he is a Tailed Beast. They can’t exactly die since they’re pure chakra. However, they can reincarnate at a later stage. Fans who haven’t read the manga will be shocked to know that Kurama has reincarnated already in the manga series.
His reincarnation is slightly different from how fans expected it. He is much smaller at the current stage of the manga. Himawari Uzumaki became the Nine-Tailed Beast Jinchuriki in the manga series. This was revealed in the Two Blue Vortex installation of the manga series.
Himawari had a skirmish with Jura, who is currently the strongest antagonist in the series. Obviously, she wasn’t able to thwart him. However, this showed plenty of promise and it’s clear that the writers intend to give Himawari plenty of time to shine during the business end of the manga series.
How Powerful is Himwari in Boruto?
Himawari Uzumaki isn’t extremely powerful in the manga series. However, it’s clear that she probably has the most potential in the manga series. Kurama stated that his synergy with Himawari was higher than any other Jinchuriki, Naruto included. This is a clear indication that Himawari could potentially surpass her own father at some point in the manga series.
Naruto took quite some time to understand Kurama’s chakra and further incorporate it into his transformations. Himawari, on the other hand, managed to do this with relative ease. She also saved Shikadai’s life when Jura impaled him. There are plenty of early signs that indicate incredible growth. If Himawari achieves her true potential, she could be as powerful as Boruto or potentially surpass him in the manga as well.

It’s clear that Kurama is well and alive in the manga series. However, his appearance has changed substantially. That being said, fans believe that he will have a similar chakra output as the series continues. Kurama was killed in the earlier parts of the Boruto anime series. However, it’s clear that he will play an important role as the series progresses. He will be key in Himawari’s growth, which in turn could impact Boruto’s fate towards the end of the manga series.
