Weapons are essentially the backbone of any mainline Monster Hunter game. However, upgrading them can often feel like a hassle in the mainline Monster Hunter games. Although Capcom did try to streamline the whole upgrades and crafting system with Monster Hunter Wilds, it can still feel quite overwhelming to new players.

Upgrading weapons in Monster Hunter is fairly simple. However, getting the right resources to do so, and selecting the correct upgrade path can be tricky. This is especially true in the case of weapons with multiple upgrade paths and completely different elemental properties. Furthermore, given how briefly the game mentions the upgrade system, it’s bound to leave some players confused.

Unfortunately, you won’t be able to make much progress through the game’s campaign without upgrading your weapons. To aid newcomers with the crafting and upgrading process, here’s a comprehensive weapon upgrade guide for Monster Hunter Wilds.

How To Unlock Weapon Upgrades in Monster Hunter Wilds

Weapon upgrades are available right from the get-go in Monster Hunter Wilds. Once you complete the prologue and the first main story hunting quest, i.e., Quematrice, you can craft and upgrade your favorite weapon up to Rarity 2. In Low Rank, you have access to Rarity 4. More Rarities of upgrades are unlocked as you progress through the main story quests. Once you finish the final main story quest in High Rank, you’ll get access to the Rarity 7 upgrades, the highest tier in base Monster Hunter Wilds. Each weapon upgrade costs resources, which can be obtained by hunting monsters or scavenging through the open-world maps.

The weapon upgrade trees are divided based on Monsters. There are also some special trees, like the Bone, Speartuna, and Hope. Each of these trees offers up to Rarity 7 upgrades. To upgrade or craft a weapon, go to the Smithy, i.e., Gemma, and select the Forge/Upgrade Weapon option. From the list of upgrades, choose the path you want to pursue and take note of the resources mentioned at the bottom of the list. You can add the upgrade path to your Wishlist to keep track of the resources during hunts.

Do note that certain upgrades require you to craft weapons from other lower Rarity trees. For instance, before you can upgrade to the Guardian Indomitable Perceval (Rarity 7 Switch Axe), you first need to craft the Rarity 1 Bone Switch Axe.

Can You Upgrade Armor in Monster Hunter Wilds?

Now that you know how to deal with weapon upgrades in Monster Hunter Wilds, you might be wondering about something similar for armor pieces. Although there is an armor upgrade system in MH Wilds, it doesn’t work the same as the weapons’. Once you’ve crafted an armor set/piece, you can upgrade it to set levels (up to 7 in HR). However, to do so, you will need to acquire Armor Spheres. Furthermore, armor upgrades aren’t available from the start. Instead, they are unlocked after you’ve completed the main story quest that takes you to the Oilwell Basin. As for the Armor Spheres, those can be acquired by completing hunting quests or Daily Bounties.
