Ash Ketchum has built an impressive team over the years, but some Pokemon were never meant to be his. Some of the strongest ones have fought alongside him, yet for one reason or another, they never became part of his official lineup. Let’s discuss five Pokemon that could have made Ash’s team legendary but remained out of reach.
1. Solgaleo
Ash met Solgaleo back when it was just a small Cosmog, and he carried it with him on his Alolan adventures. This little Pokemon, nicknamed Nebby, quickly became a special part of his group. However, it wasn’t long before it evolved and revealed its true power.
When Nebby became Solgaleo, it stepped up to help Ash take down Lusamine and later played a key role in the fight against Necrozma. Even though they shared incredible moments, Solgaleo wasn’t a Pokemon Ash could truly call his own. It had a bigger purpose, and after their battles, it went its way.
2. Lugia
Ash has had multiple encounters with Lugia, and each time, it was clear that this Pokemon held a deep connection with him. However, catching one was never really an option.
In Pokemon the Movie 2000: The Power of One, Lugia’s importance to the balance of nature became obvious. Trying to capture it could have led to disastrous consequences. Ash, being who he is, never wanted to risk that. He understood that some Pokemon are better left wild, no matter how powerful they are.
3. Latias and Latios
Latias is one of those Pokemon that chose Ash rather than the other way around. When he found an injured Latias, he took the time to care for it. Grateful for his kindness, Latias secretly followed him, eventually asking for help to save Latios.
Once their rescue mission was complete, Latias and Latios returned to their rightful place. Ash had the chance to fight alongside Latios and formed a strong bond with them, but he knew they belonged somewhere else. Some friendships aren’t about ownership—they’re about respect.
4. Mewtwo
This Pokemon has always been cautious when trusting humans, and honestly, who could blame it? After being created in a lab and used as a tool for power, it had no interest in becoming anyone’s Pokemon—not even Ash’s.
Though Ash and Mewtwo crossed paths and fought together, Mewtwo never wanted to be caught. Even after realizing that not all humans were evil, it preferred to remain independent. It needed to protect itself and its fellow clones, making it clear that joining Ash’s team was never an option.
5. Rayquaza
Rayquaza is one of the most powerful legendary Pokemon, but it isn’t one that sticks around. It mostly stays high in the atmosphere, away from human interference. When it does appear, it’s usually in the middle of a battle that shakes the entire region.
During Pokemon: Destiny Deoxys, Rayquaza’s sheer power caused chaos in LaRousse City. Its territorial nature made it unpredictable, and Ash never had a real opportunity to capture it. More than anything, it is a Pokemon that thrives on its own, far beyond the reach of any trainer.
Ash has had some incredible Pokemon by his side, but not all were meant to be caught. Some were better as allies, some had greater responsibilities, and some refused to be owned. Still, their impact on Ash’s journey is undeniable. Who knows—maybe one day, he’ll meet them again!
