Learn how to unlock and perform Parry, a crucial technique that enhances your combat efficiency, in Avowed.

Avowed, a newly released first-person fantasy RPG, takes you through the mysterious world of Eora, where combat is your key to survival. To withstand the dangers of Eora, you must learn and master various combat techniques, including parrying. Unlike most other games, you can’t parry straight away in Avowed. Instead, you must unlock the Parry ability before using it in combat. Unlocking and mastering Parry can significantly enhance your gameplay in several aspects. Find out how to unlock and execute Parry in Obsidian Entertainment’s RPG Avowed.

Unlocking Parry in Avowed
You can unlock Parry in the Abilities section with a skill point. Navigate to the Ranger tab and locate Parry in Level 1, then invest a skill point to unlock the ability. Once unlocked, you can perform Parry during combat.
To increase Parry’s efficiency, you can invest additional skill points to increase its rank. While Rank 2 increases efficiency by 25% and deals greater stun when parrying, Rank 3 increases efficiency by 50% and deals even greater stuns.
You can also combine other abilities to make the best out of the Parry technique. The “Arrow Deflection” ability in the Ranger skill tree allows you to deflect arrows and even projectiles rather than just melee attacks, whereas the “Reflect” ability from the Fighter skill tree sends the arrows and projectiles back to the attacker.

How To Perform Parry in Avowed
To execute a parry, press the block button right before the attack lands on you. This triggers a clank sound, indicating you deflected the enemy’s melee attack. When timed perfectly, a parry staggers the enemy, creating an opportunity for a counterattack.
You can also use a shield to parry an incoming attack. However, you cannot parry the enemy’s attacks when wielding dual weapons in both hands.
In addition to staggering enemies and creating an opening, successful parries build up the yellow stun meter below the enemy’s health bar faster. Once the meter is full, you can pull off a special attack that deals significant damage.
