All Avowed Weapons Explained

Obsidian Entertainment recently showed off more extended Avowed gameplay, explaining how weapons fit into their combat system.

Avowed Gameplay

Avowed Weapons System Explained

You can customize two entirely different weapon load outs in the Avowed combat system. These load outs give you the option to fill both a primary hand and an off-hand with whichever weapons you would like.

That means you can dual wield a gun and a wand, pair two wands together, or equip whichever combination of weapons you want to use. The benefit of an additional load out means you can seamlessly swap between two sets of weapons, allowing you to equip both melee and ranged weapons. While many players tend to gravitate towards a specific play style, this system gives you just enough flexibility to branch out into new styles of combat you may not be as used to playing.

We also don’t know how the weapon system will apply to companions. For example, we know Giatta can deal damage and heal, but it is unclear whether or not you can replace companion weapons and change their play style.

These are all of the weapon types we know of in Avowed right now, explained.

Avowed Guns

Many players got excited when they noticed guns in the trailer.

Avowed Gameplay Scene

While Avowed does have all of your traditional weapon types, the guns included give more variety to the ranged options. We know there are flintlock pistols, but we haven’t see any additional gun types in the gameplay footage yet. It’s unclear whether or not Obsidian Entertainment will include any additional gun types, but we do know you can equip a pistol, at the very least.

Like all weapons, guns can also be enchanted. We still don’t know if certain enchantments are specific to certain weapon types.

Avowed Wands

Wands are some of the most interesting weapons Avowed offers.

A single wand makes for a fun, ranged play style. You can pair a wand with any of the other one-handed weapons mentioned here to add some ranged damage into your build. What makes the Avowed wands unique is you can also dual wield them. With two wands, your character can double the speed at which they throw spells, giving an extremely fast-paced play style. While wands are definitely in Avowed, we still haven’t seen any two-handed staves in the gameplay footage. We still don’t know if there is a two-handed magic weapon in the game yet.

Since wands make one of the more unique play styles in Avowed, we expect many players to make a ranged load out with two wands.

Shield & Weapons Explained

Traditionally, a sword and board is a classic play style that many gamers love.

The twist in Avowed is you can equip any one-handed weapon with a shield. That means instead of running the traditional setup with a sword, you could opt for a wand or a pistol paired with a shield. This gives you some flexibility with a more defensive, ranged setup that might be a totally new play style. From what we have seen in the trailer and extended gameplay footage, it looks like you can equip shield only if the off-hand. As much as we would love a double shield build, we haven’t seen it yet.

All Avowed One-Handed Melee Weapons Explained

The one-handed melee weapons in Avowed look very dynamic.

So far, we’ve seen a one-handed melee weapon paired with almost any other weapon style possible. You can equip one in either your main-hand or off-hand, giving you the option to add some physical attacks to any other weapon in the game. These weapons, like many others, are also clearly enchant-able. So far, we’ve noticed swords, maces, and axes in the trailer and gameplay footage.

We’re still keeping our eyes out for daggers, a fan-favorite of many RPGs.

All Two-Handed Melee Weapons Explained

There are many two-handed melee weapons to choose from in Avowed.

So far, we have seen great swords, maces, and battle axes in the released gameplay footage. While two-handed weapons do more damage, we’re still curious what role two-handed weapons play in the combat system. Right now, Avowed fans are focusing on the dual-wielding system, but we’re expecting Obsidian to make two-handed gameplay equally exciting. That could come in the form of unique spells or enchantments.

At the very least, we expect two-handed weapons to be very successful at breaking through enemy defenses and cleaving through large groups of enemies.

Avowed Bows

We have only seen one quick showcase with a bow so far, but we know they will be in Avowed.

What we aren’t sure of is what kind of builds bows fit into. In the Avowed trailer, a player briefly swaps to a bow and fires an arrow at an enemy mid-range. You can only fire so many arrows at once, however. Because of this, we expect bows to either be very hard-hitting or more of a long-ranged weapon. It is also possible you can equip enchanted arrows, but we still don’t know how ammo fit into the ranged weapons system.

As we continue to see more released gameplay, we’re going to be looking for what differentiates the weapons we expect to have ammunition from the others.

Avowed Weapon Enchantments Explained

There are also weapon enchantments in Avowed.

Each weapon type is enchantable, meaning you could have a sword or a pistol that does fire damage to enemies. While it isn’t clear if there are any limitations to which weapon types can have which enchantments, this extra layer of customizability adds even more variety into the Avowed weapon types.

We still don’t know if you can enchant weapons yourself or if weapons need to drop with different enchantments. If you can add enchantments to your weapons manually, this would give you a little more customization and build variety.

Magic Attacks Explained

Another type of “weapon” we don’t know much about is the use of magic abilities.

While this isn’t necessarily a traditional weapon type, the gameplay footage shows players using magic as one of their weapon slots, dual wielding a weapon with a magic ability. Similar to how a shield might only be equipped in an off-hand, we have seen a book in the players left hand multiple times, both by itself and with a one-handed melee weapon. We still don’t know if the book is required for certain spells or what the limitations may be when dual wielding with spells, but spells seem to be an integral part of the combat as a whole.
