One Piece has a lot of mysteries that are yet to be uncovered when it comes to our protagonist’s father, Monkey D. Dragon. Other than that, he is a mystery. We know he works very secretly, and other powerful characters see him as a threat.
We were not able to see much of him during the pre-time skip, but now, as we are in the Final Saga, Dragon is making his move. Who Is Monkey D. Dragon?
Dragon is the Supreme Commander of the Revolutionary Army. He started as part of the Marines. When he learned the truth about the World Government, he realized the people he was working for were not really who they claimed to be. He left that world behind. His idea of justice was vastly different from that of the World Government, especially after the incident that happened in Ohara.
He decided he was going to overthrow the current governors and was then labeled the “World’s Worst Criminal.”
We do not know who his wife is, and he has never spoken much about his family background, as he wanted to avoid jeopardizing their safety. There are also theories that he was closely associated with Gol D. Roger, as he was present during Roger’s execution and looked very concerned.
What Are Monkey D. Dragon’s Current Powers?
Let us discuss the known powers of Monkey D. Dragon. We know he can wield Conqueror’s Haki, an ability that grants its user enhanced combat skills and the potential to knock out those with inferior Haki levels (just like how we saw Luffy using it in the Marineford Arc).
He exudes an intimidating presence, so it is safe to assume he has great physical strength. We can also back this up with the fact that Garp is insanely strong, and as his son, Dragon must have inherited that brute strength.
He is a great strategist and leader, which is a powerful asset, as he has garnered a strong support system. Lastly, fans believe that he has eaten a Devil Fruit which grants him control over the wind. In Loguetown, when he intervened, he saved Luffy from Smoker with a sudden gust of wind.
Monkey D. Dragon Achievements?
It is important to emphasize again that Dragon leads the Revolutionary Army. This is a major achievement in One Piece. He has formed strong alliances and has consistently operated in secrecy. Dragon saved Luffy from Smoker during the Loguetown incident.
He saved Sabo from drowning and took care of him. This had a butterfly effect, as Sabo later inherited Ace’s Devil Fruit (Mera Mera no Mi). He is a great strategist, and his plans allow Sabo to steal weapons from Doflamingo.
He established his reputation as a freedom fighter and built strong alliances with Bartholomew Kuma and Emporio Ivankov, who remain associated with him. He has worked tirelessly to grow his army and become a significant threat to the World Government.
Why Will Dragon Never Satisfy One-Piece Fans?
As fans, we recognize that Monkey D. Dragon carries the Will of D., yet we do not have enough screen time to understand him. This fuels our excitement as One Piece now reaches its final arc. There is a lot of weight attached to his character that has built up over the years, yet we still have no clear understanding of who he is.
We know he is extremely powerful, but we have no way to measure it. Also, when it comes to being a responsible family member, he has been an absent father to our protagonist, Luffy, which deducts popularity points. To make up for that, he does have his Revolutionary Army.
However, their actions so far do not measure up to what the Straw Hat crew has accomplished. For him to redeem himself, he will have to do something truly remarkable to compensate for all the screen time he has missed.
There are speculations that he possesses a Devil Fruit, but this has not been confirmed. Additionally, with Garp as his father and Luffy as his son—both of whom have earned immense respect and are overpowered—Dragon will have to live up to both their legacies. Garp is admirable without having any Devil Fruit powers, while Luffy has unlocked Gear 5. Dragon must prove himself worthy for fans to accept him at the same level as his father and son.
