After years of intense matches, personal growth, and unforgettable moments, the Haikyuu!! manga came to an emotional and satisfying conclusion in July 2020. Fans had followed Shoyo Hinata’s journey from an eager, inexperienced player to a force to be reckoned with on the volleyball court. The ending provided not just closure but a glimpse into the futures of our favorite characters, showing how their experiences on the court shaped their lives beyond high school.

But let’s be real—saying goodbye to Haikyuu!! wasn’t easy. It’s one of those sports series that isn’t just about the game but about the people who play it, their struggles, their friendships, and the lessons they learn along the way. So, how exactly did the manga wrap things up, and what happened to our beloved characters? Let’s dive in!

How Does the Haikyuu!! Manga End?

In classic Haikyuu!! fashion, the final chapters don’t just end with a high school championship but take us years into the future. The story skips ahead to show where the Karasuno boys—and their rivals—end up as adults. Some remain deeply involved in the sport, while others pursue different paths.

The Haikyuu!! manga concluded with Chapter 402, offering a comprehensive look into the futures of its beloved characters. The final panel poignantly depicts Hinata and Kageyama reuniting for the World Championship. While Hinata plays for Asas Sao Paulo, Kageyama represents Ali Roma. They meet once again, this time as world-class players, determined to win together. This full-circle moment beautifully encapsulates their journey, highlighting how their rivalry and partnership have shaped them into two of the greatest players in the sport.

One of the biggest highlights of the finale is the professional match between Asas Sao Paulo and Ali Roma, featuring none other than Shoyo Hinata and Tobio Kageyama. After training in Brazil and refining his beach volleyball skills, Hinata returns to Japan and joins Asas Sao Paulo. Meanwhile, Kageyama plays for Ali Roma, continuing their long-standing rivalry on the international stage. This final match is a symbolic culmination of everything they’ve been through—rivalry, teamwork, and mutual growth.

The story then jumps to the 2021 Olympics, where former teammates and rivals reunite, playing together for Japan. It’s a perfect farewell that shows just how far they’ve come.

So, what happened to everyone else? Let’s take a look at where Haikyuu!! left its main characters:

  • Shoyo Hinata – After training in Brazil and refining his skills through beach volleyball, Hinata returned to Japan as a pro player. He joined Asas Sao Paulo in the Super League and later represented Japan in the Olympics.
  • Tobio Kageyama – Kageyama becomes a professional setter for Ali Roma in Italy’s Serie A, proving himself in one of the most competitive leagues and competing in the Olympics for Japan. His precise and strategic play cements his reputation as a volleyball genius.
  • Kei Tsukishima – Tsukishima continues his volleyball career as a middle blocker for the Sendai Frogs in Japan’s V-League. He remains analytical and composed, using his intelligence to dominate the net. His growth as a player and person is evident as he fully embraces the sport.
  • Yu Nishinoya – Rather than continuing volleyball professionally, Nishinoya chooses a life of adventure. He spends his post-high school years traveling the world, enjoying new experiences. Though he steps away from the sport, he stays connected with his former teammates.
  • Ryunosuke Tanaka & Kiyoko Shimizu – They get married! Tanaka becomes a personal trainer, while Kiyoko continues supporting him.
  • Daichi Sawamura – Becomes a police officer, fitting his dependable and responsible nature.
  • Koshi Sugawara – Works as an elementary school teacher, shaping young minds with his patience and kindness.
  • Asahi Azumane – Starts his own fashion brand, blending his love for design with his creativity.
  • Kenma Kozume – Kenma pursues a career as a businessman and investor, focusing on esports and streaming. He uses his strategic mind to build a successful company and even sponsors Hinata’s training in Brazil. Though he’s no longer a player, he remains involved in volleyball in his own way.
  • Tetsuro Kuroo – Kuroo joins the Japan Volleyball Association, working to promote the sport he loves. His charisma and leadership helped develop young talent and grow volleyball’s popularity. He ensures that the next generation of players gets the opportunities they deserve.
  • Oikawa Tooru – Oikawa moves to Argentina, where he continues his career as a professional setter. Despite being overseas, he stays competitive and keeps his rivalry with Kageyama alive. His passion for volleyball remains as strong as ever.

It’s great to see that each character finds a future that suits them, whether it’s in volleyball or something completely different.

How Much of the Haikyuu!! Manga Is Left To Be Animated?

As of now, the anime has covered up to Chapter 292, which wrapped up the events of the fourth season. However, the manga ends in Chapter 402, meaning there are 110 chapters left to be adapted. That’s a lot of content, including some of the most important moments of the story.

Haikyuu!! The Movie: Decisive Battle at the Garbage Dump covers the highly anticipated match between Karasuno High and Nekoma High, often referred to as the “Dumpster Battle.” This film has animated Chapters 293 to 310 of the manga. Following this, approximately 92 chapters remain unanimated, spanning from Chapter 311 to the series’ conclusion in Chapter 402.

Fans are eagerly waiting to see how the anime will handle the time skip and professional arcs. While one Haikyuu!! movie has been announced to conclude the series, many are hoping for a full-fledged season instead so that we can get every detail of Hinata’s journey animated.

Should Haikyuu!! Have a Sequel?

Honestly? The manga wrapped up in such a perfect way that a sequel might not be necessary. The time skip gave us everything we needed—answers about the characters’ futures, a final match to cap off their rivalries, and even a glimpse into international competitions.

However, that doesn’t mean we wouldn’t welcome some extra content! Spin-offs exploring Hinata’s time in Brazil, the pro league matches in greater detail, or even stories focusing on other teams like Nekoma or Fukurodani would be amazing additions to the Haikyuu!! world. Whether or not we get one, though, the ending we got was satisfying enough to stand on its own.

For Haikyuu!!‘s 10th anniversary, Haruichi Furudate dropped a special one-shot called “A Party Reignited.” This chapter follows Kuroo, who’s now working in the Athletic Promotion Division of Japan’s Volleyball Association, as he puts together a star-studded exhibition match with some of the best players in the world. It’s basically a big reunion, showing how much the characters have grown while proving that their love for volleyball is still going strong.

Conclusion

The Haikyuu!! manga ending was everything fans could have hoped for—emotional, inspiring, and full of the passion that made the series so beloved. Instead of a simple high school conclusion, it showed us the characters’ journeys into adulthood, proving that their love for volleyball (and each other) never faded. It brought everything full circle with Hinata and Kageyama’s World Championship reunion.

With only one movie left to wrap up the anime, fans are eagerly anticipating how it will portray these crucial final moments. Regardless of how it unfolds, Haikyuu!! has left an undeniable impact on sports anime, and its legacy will continue to inspire future generations of fans and athletes alike. But one thing is clear—whether through the manga, the anime, or just the memories it gave us, Haikyuu!! will always hold a special place in our hearts.
