Consequently, villains in the series pursue diverse motivations, ranging from destroying for fun to following twisted ideologies. All of these villains were necessary as their existence proved to test the limits Heroes could go in protecting and pushed them to become stronger.
This article discusses the top ten most powerful villains in the My Hero Academia universe, ranking them based on their raw power, strategic brilliance, and their role in the story.
1. All For One

All For One, whose real name was Shigaraki, was the ultimate threat to the world. His powers were the root of all major villain activity taking place in the universe of My Hero Academia. Even his Quirk called All for One gave him the ability to steal anyone’s Quirk and wield it as his own. This power of his, combined with finding a way to live a prolonged life, gave him sufficient time to come up with a plan to rule over the world. He started the League of Villains organization, and people considered him the strongest villain in all of Japan.
Shigaraki had to steal the power of One for All to become invincible; therefore, he fought with every person ever who inherited this power. All Might was the closest one to defeat him before Midoriya could finish the task. He sought to become an all-powerful evil and envisioned himself as a “Demon Lord,” drawing inspiration from the comic books he once read with his brother.
2. Tomura Shigaraki

Tenko Shimura, later dubbed Tomura Shigaraki by All for One, was one of the main antagonists after All For One in the series. He was the leader of the League of Villains organization. He dreamed of becoming the next biggest villain and made sure to wipe out anyone who stood in his way. All for One meant to use Tomura as his new vessel.
He called his Quirk Decay, which allowed him to disintegrate anything he touched into dust. Possessing this fearsome power along with genius intellect made him unstoppable for a long time. What makes him a powerful villain is that every time he faces failure, he trains himself to become stronger and returns as an even bigger threat. Like how Midoriya constantly worked hard towards becoming a better hero, Tomura was actively working towards becoming a better villain.
3. Gigantomachia

Gigantomachia was also part of the League of Villains. He served All For One for the longest time and then received the responsibility of becoming Tomura Shigaraki’s bodyguard. What made him more powerful than normal villains was that All For One had gifted him with multiple Quirks. His immense size, strength, and durability made him a walking catastrophe, capable of leveling cities with his mere presence.
If he went on a rampant rage spree, the only thing that could calm him down was the voice of All For One. In the series, people describe his presence as a walking calamity. Wherever he goes, destruction follows. It took a group of Heroes to finally bring him down.
4. Overhaul (Kai Chisaki)

Kai Chisaki was also known as Overhaul. He was the former Yakuza Leader of the Shie Hassaikai organization. Also played the lead antagonist role in the Shie Hassaikai Arc. Overhaul’s quirk allows him to disassemble and reassemble matter at will. He was so powerful that even One For All also took notice of him.
Overhaul’s goal was to make sure that the world reverted to times when Quirks did not exist. He was antisocial and impulsive. Motivated by his ego and lack of morals, he began working on a plan to use Eri’s Quirk to erase a person’s ability. Due to his Quirk erasing injection, LeMillion became one of his victims and lost his Quirk. If he had not taken it down by Midoiya, it would have been an end for all the Heroes. And All For One would have an easy path served to him to take over the world.
5. Kurogiri

Kurogiri was a B-rank villain and a high-end Nomu. His Quirk, Warp Gate, allows for instantaneous transportation, enabling swift attacks, strategic retreats, and the efficient movement of resources.
Beyond his offensive capabilities, his warp gates also function defensively, redirecting attacks and creating impenetrable barriers. Moreover, his calm and collected demeanor, coupled with his analytical mind, makes him a formidable strategist, capable of coordinating complex operations and exploiting his opponent’s weaknesses. He was brainwashed by All For One and made to have no free will; therefore, they were able to control him and force him to work for the villains.
6. Re-Destro

Re-Destro was the leader of the Meta Liberation Army. His Quirk, Stress, acts as a potent amplifier, increasing his power exponentially as his emotional state intensifies, making him a formidable force in combat. His raw strength, which he backed up with intellect, helped him come up with strategies while fighting.
He was able to form a revolutionary movement just by being influential and spreading information about his philosophy. Re-destro was able to form an alliance with the League of Villains. His dream was to make a world where people could use their Quirks freely without consequence. Moreover, Re-destro was a powerful villain due to his charisma and intelligence, which complimented his leadership skills, and he was almost successful with his plans.
This union of disparate villainous factions demonstrated the sheer scale of the threat facing hero society and introduced the complex concept of Quirk liberation to the main narrative, which added a layer of political conflict to the series.
7. Hood (High-End Nomu)

Dr. Garaki bioengineered these weapons, and Hood was designed to be the ultimate weapon of destruction. This Nomu was given multiple Quirks that made him a versatile and powerful opponent. His Super Regeneration allowed him to recover from almost any injury, while Quirks like Hardening and Multi-Spear provided him with both formidable offense and defense. Hood showed the capability of strategizing and showed signs of intelligence that other Nomus did not have.
Endeavor was pushed to his absolute limits while fighting it, which shows the growing threat it posed.
8. Dabi

Toya Todoroki had named himself Dabi; he was one of the main antagonists of the series. He was the eldest son of Endeavor. Dabi became wild due to his father’s neglect and decided to become a villain as revenge for all he went through as a child. His Quirk, Cremation, allowed him to generate and control intense blue flames, capable of burning anything in their path. The only downside was his body was not immune to his Quirk, which resulted in him burning himself.
Dabi was also one of the nine lieutenants for the Paranormal Liberation Front. During the Final War Arc, it took all of the Todoroki Family to defeat him, and he was an incredibly strong threat to all of Japan.
9. Twice

Jin Bubaigawara’s villain name was Twice. He could create clones of people or objects through physical contact. Twice created clones of himself due to his loneliness and made them indulge in criminal activities, which resulted in him becoming one of the most wanted criminals.
He had joined the League of Villains to get clarity about himself as he suffered from dissociative identity disorder. Also, the Paranormal Liberation Front eventually appointed Twice as a lieutenant. While saving Toga, he finally came to his senses and mastered his Quirk, making him a devastating force. Hawks had to kill him because he posed too great a threat to be kept alive.
10. Muscular

Goto Imasuji was also known as Muscular and later Jailbreaker. He is the embodiment of toxic behavior and is a member of the League of Villains, who is responsible for the deaths of the Pro Hero team. He played a minor antagonist role yet did significant damage to Midoriya. Muscular is bloodthirsty and enjoys killing people for fun. If someone tries to stop him, he would get angry and do anything in his power to stop such people from coming in between his fun time.
He had killed Kota Izumi’s parents just because they tried to stop him. This reveals his twisted nature. Muscular is mentally unstable, which is not a good combination to have with his Quirk. His power is called Muscle Augmentation, and it allows him to manipulate the muscle layers and fibers under his skin. Basically, it enhances his strength and increases his speed, which makes him an explosive fighter. Muscular is considered to be Midoriya’s toughest opponent.
Conclusion
The villains in My Hero Academia surpass the conventional role of a villain. Each of them had unique characteristics and motivations which made them choose the path of evil. They gave a tough fight and did their best to live upto their way of life. However powerful a villain one might be, My Hero Academia has taught us that there will always be someone who will bring an end to evil.
