God of War has been an epic saga that’s made a proper place in the hearts of gamers since its very inception. Now, almost twenty years later, the series and its games remain just as popular, if not more so. While the core gameplay mechanics are at the heart of this long-term success, the series has also provided us with numerous unforgettable moments through its plot.

In this piece, we’ll list five God of War moments that we think define the series as a whole. In doing so, we’ll consider both the original trilogy and the modern reboots.

Top 5 God of War Moments in History

The following is a list of moments you should experience at least once to fall in love with the God of War franchise.

  • The Loki reveal
  • Kratos fighting Poseidon
  • Kratos fighting Zeus
  • The Blades of Chaos make a comeback
  • Kratos fighting Thor

Now, let’s understand why these moments are so iconic that they help define the series.

The Loki Reveal (God of War, 2018)

The first of the rebooted games in the series was God of War (2018). In it, Kratos and Atreus make a long and arduous journey filled with peril simply to fulfill the wish of Kratos’s wife, Faye. While we get very little information about Faye throughout the game, the ending offers up a huge twist.

As the game ends, the players come to find out that Faye was actually a Giant. Even more surprising is that Atreus, Faye and Kratos’s son, is none other than Loki. If you’re unfamiliar with Norse mythology, you should know that Loki is considered a god of mischief and trickery.

The surprising and unexpected nature of this information is what earns it a spot on our list of the top five moments in the series. Atreus being Loki also perfectly set up the stage for the next game in the series, God of War Ragnarok.

Kratos Fighting Poseidon (God of War 3, 2010)

At the beginning of God of War 3, Kratos engages in a battle with Poseidon. The massive god of the sea attacks Kratos while he is on top of a humongous Titan. The battle sets the stage for what’s to come in God of War 3. You have to quickly attack the god’s limbs as his massive claws slam down on top of you at regular intervals.

At the same time, you’ll need to avoid the god’s electricity-based attacks. Beyond the fight’s difficulty, the scale of the battle is what impresses you and leaves an indelible mark on your mind. And after you get through all three phases, Kratos dispatches Poseidon in spectacularly violent fashion.

Kratos Fighting Zeus (God of War 3, 2010)

Now let’s jump from the starting boss fight of God of War 3 to its final one. The next entry on our list is Kratos’s battle with his father, Zeus. It involves several phases, each bringing some new flavor to the gameplay. At one point, Kratos has to sacrifice Pandora as Zeus taunts him. And who can forget the iconic lines during a cutscene as the fight progresses?

Kratos says, “Face me, father. It is time to end this,” and Zeus replies, “Yes, my son. It is time.” Perhaps even more epic is when the battle takes you literally inside Gaia, the massive Titan.

The Blades of Chaos Make a Comeback (God of War, 2018)

The next major God of War moment happens in the 2018 reboot. A decent chunk of the way through the game, Kratos finally returns to his shack to retrieve an important possession. Slowly and steadily, he uncovers the Blades of Chaos from inside a hidden compartment in his home.

This moment is special for fans of the original trilogy, as it is a direct callback to Kratos relying heavily on the blades in those games. God of War (2018) didn’t have too many references to past games, which makes this moment extra memorable. And it somehow makes Kratos feel complete and ready to trample any foes that come his way.

Kratos Fighting Thor (God of War Ragnarok, 2022)

Almost every piece of marketing material for God of War Ragnarok hinted that Thor and Kratos would finally come face to face in the game. So, fans were already expecting an epic showdown between the two gods when the title was released. And the game didn’t disappoint in this regard. Thor literally comes knocking at Kratos’s door, followed by Odin. The God of Thunder is seeking revenge for his son Baldur’s death. Odin says that there is a way forward without violence, but Kratos outright rejects this proposal.

The following fight is extremely fun and showcases just how powerful Thor can be. However, it ends in a stalemate. But don’t worry—you’ll face off against Thor once more right before the game’s ending. This time, the god doesn’t hold back. Prepare for an extremely challenging fight.
