The God of War franchise turns 20 this year, making it the perfect time to look back at all of the games that have been released over the years. While the 2018 reboot and its sequel largely reinvented the gameplay mechanics and storytelling, almost every game in the series has been a fan favorite.

Who doesn’t enjoy embodying a rage-filled Kratos, always on the verge of ripping his enemies to shreds? As such, it is extremely difficult to rank them, but we’ll still take a shot at it. The following is a list of our top 5 choices when it comes to the God of War games.

Top 5 God of War Games Ever Made

Here are the games we think are the best in the series, sorted from number 5 to number 1.

  • God of War: Ascension
  • God of War 3
  • God of War (2018)
  • God of War 2
  • God of War Ragnarok

Now, let’s dive deeper into this ranking and see what each of these games did phenomenally.

5. God of War: Ascension

God of War: Ascension was released in 2013 at a point when many players were already feeling fatigued with the series’ overall gameplay. It had been three years since the Greek mythology plotline came to an end, so developers needed to come up with something new and unique for this title. They chose to go with a multiplayer mode that players didn’t receive all too well. However, looking back, it’s clear that Ascension did a lot of things well, including its brilliant level design. It is also easily one of the most beautiful-looking games of the PS3 console generation.

However, its missteps with gameplay and the multiplayer mode crippled the game’s chances of ever leaving a mark. It’s important to note that God of War: Ascension was the final game in the series before Santa Monica Studio launched the reboot in 2018. So, it’s clear that they were already pondering a makeover by this point.

4. God of War 3

God of War 3 launched in 2010 and wowed fans of the series almost instantly. The beginning of the game itself was impressive enough to hook players. The battle between Kratos and Poseidon, with a Titan punching the God of the Sea, was truly a spectacle to behold. Add to that the prospect of the protagonist finally butting heads with his father, Zeus, and you have a surefire recipe for success.

However, that isn’t to say that everything was perfect here. God of War 3 tried to one-up almost every aspect from previous games. This sometimes made Kratos’ entire journey to the top of Mount Olympus feel a bit too ludicrous.

3. God of War (2018)

In 2018, Santa Monica Studio decided to give the series a fresh coat of paint, and in doing so, created one of the most engaging God of War games ever. Gone were the mindless violence and god-murdering adventures of Kratos. Instead, they were replaced by an older Kratos, who is now a father to a son named Atreus.

After having lost his wife, Kratos and Atreus embark on a journey to fulfill her last request. During the journey, players get to experience the strained relationship between the stone-like Kratos and his son. Over time, you gradually see them growing closer. You see the respect and care grow between father and son.

While making the huge shift in tone, Santa Monica also made sure to bring deep and engaging combat into the reboot. Although not a traditional open-world title, God of War (2018) allowed players lots of freedom to explore the different maps, unlock secrets, face off against optional bosses, and much more. This ultimately made the experience memorable, both in terms of the narrative and the gameplay.

2. God of War 2

Many players credit God of War 2 for the overall success and popularity of the series. Never before had players witnessed such high stakes. Never before had a fighting game had such fluid movements and combos. God of War 2 practically improved on every aspect compared to the first game in the series. Players also praised the environmental puzzles in the game, which were just challenging enough to make you feel satisfied when you completed them.

Also, the story of the game culminates in one of the best cliffhangers in the gaming industry, where Kratos declares an all-out war against the Greek gods.

1. God of War Ragnarok

The latest entry in the God of War game franchise makes the top of our list. God of War Ragnarok continues building on the base that Santa Monica created with the 2018 reboot, improving every aspect, including the gameplay and the narrative. It is the closing chapter of the series’ Norse mythology era, which primarily deals with the onset of Ragnarok, an apocalyptic event that arises after the deaths of Odin and Thor.

Alongside Kratos and Atreus, many other companions join you throughout the journey that takes you across the Nine Realms.

The developers improved the combat greatly from the previous game, allowing for greater customization and variety. Apart from this, the game’s side quests and environmental puzzles were also extremely fun. And if that’s not enough, the studio also launched a free expansion, dubbed Valhalla, a few years after the base game was released. This expansion added several hours’ worth of story and gameplay to players completely free of charge.
