Who Are Luffy and Lucci in One Piece?
Monkey D. Luffy is the protagonist of One Piece and the captain of the Straw Hat Pirates. As a child, he wished to sail the seas in search of freedom and finally set out after coming of age. On his journey, he picked up several unique individuals to join his crew while raising his own reputation. Throughout the series, he travels across numerous islands, helping their people and defeating dangerous villains.
By revealing the true form of his Gomu Gomu no Mi, which grants him the powers of the Sun God Nika, Luffy is currently recognized as a global threat and has the title of Emperor. This strengthens his resolve as he fights to save the oppressed and protect his friends.
If Luffy is the face of heroism, Lucci is the exact opposite. This antagonist was originally a member of the CP9, a secret unit of the World Government. Wielding the Neko Neko no Mi, Model: Leopard, he is an extremely formidable fighter who most Straw Hat members hate.
Lucci is generally subservient to the World Government and follows their orders faithfully. However, his emotions come out when Luffy is involved. This was due to the defeat he suffered at the hands of the protagonist in Enies Lobby. It also caused their rematch at Egghead.
Why Did Luffy and Lucci Fight in the Egghead Arc?
The Egghead Arc revolves around the Straw Hats’ visit to Dr. Vegapunk’s futuristic island Egghead. While there, we discovered that the scientist had been researching the Void Century and possessed all sorts of knowledge forbidden by the government.
Unfortunately, the Celestial Dragons also got wind of this and sent their agents to assassinate Vegapunk. This included Lucci, who was now a member of the CP0, an organization superior to the CP9. Despite not being permitted to enter Egghead, Lucci and his allies snuck into the island.
Soon after arriving, they quickly got to work by destroying Atlas, one of Vegapunk’s satellites. Luffy, who was nearby, ran into Lucci, and the antagonist immediately recognized his old opponent. Although Lucci immediately wanted to fight, he was restrained by his peers since Luffy was an Emperor. However, this meant little to him, as the CP0 member was eager to face his rival.
What Happened During Luffy and Lucci’s Rematch?
As Lucci jumped into battle, he revealed his awakened Zoan form, which greatly increased his powers, durability, and senses. In response, Luffy uses Gear 5, taking on the form of Nika. The two began trading blows, but the difference was soon apparent as Luffy landed painful punches on Lucci’s body.
However, the protagonist was soon distracted by the appearance of his ally Sentomaru, who controlled the Seraphim. To prevent losing control of the Pacifistas, Lucci took advantage and attacked Sentomaru.
Though hurt, Sentomaru managed to stay conscious and retain control over the Seraphim. A shocked Luffy decides to stop Lucci from running rampant and put an end to the antagonist’s attempts at killing his friend. He used his creative powers to push Lucci into a corner before finally beating him down with a Gum-Gum Dawn Rocket.
This marked the end of their battle as Lucci felt his mind slipping away and came out of his leopard form.
The Significance of Luffy and Lucci’s Rematch in One Piece
While Luffy and Lucci’s rematch seemed to be drawn out due to their chaotic surroundings, it was a short affair that merely lasted a few blows. Luffy completely overpowered his opponent despite Lucci awakening his Devil Fruit.
This was a moment of disenchantment for Lucci as he couldn’t believe the power and force that Luffy was able to generate. Things got worse for the antagonist later in the arc as he was decisively defeated by Zoro, too, despite underestimating him.
Hence, this battle is an extremely significant moment showcasing how far the main characters have come. While Lucci was once a difficult opponent for Luffy, he is now merely a small-time villain who can’t threaten him.
Despite considering the protagonist to be his rival, Lucci was soon humbled, effectively removing him as a danger from the plot. Luffy, on the other hand, further established his rightful position as an Emperor. While there were several debates on whether his victory against Kaido was deserved, his convincing beatdown of Lucci left no complaints.
