Not all games hold the player’s hand and provide a smooth and enjoyable experience. Some games are designed to make the player suffer, with grueling difficulty that pushes patience to its utmost limit. Developers designed these games for only the most hardcore and skilled players, which has deterred many casual players from playing them. If you are looking for an actual challenge, here are the 5 hardest games of all time.

1. Kingdom Come Deliverance

On Hardcore difficulty, Kingdom Come Deliverance is easily one of the most difficult games of all time. The reason is that this difficulty setting turns it into a full medieval simulator. Henry will be born with forced birth defects, which can range from slower leveling to taking more damage. Additionally, there is no pointer on the map, meaning players must manually locate themselves by observing landmarks and constellations.

If you get lost in a forest, it becomes almost impossible to find your way back. Furthermore, there’s no visible health or stamina bar, forcing players to rely on intuition to gauge these two crucial elements during combat.

2. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is exceptionally hard on the Deathmarch difficulty setting. The main reason is that everything can kill you in one or two hits, while enemies take over ten hits to go down. Funnily enough, even mice deal absurd amounts of damage, easily reducing Geralt to 40% health with just a few bites. The only reliable way to beat this difficulty is to never get hit—otherwise, Geralt will die.

All these limitations make The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt one of the hardest games ever, provided it is played on Deathmarch difficulty.

3. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

This list would be incomplete without a Hidetaka Miyazaki game, and here it is. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is easily the hardest game FromSoftware has ever made. It relies entirely on the player’s skill and technique and offers no handholding whatsoever. The bosses are a test of precise parrying, countering, and proper use of Shinobi tools to achieve victory.

Sekiro also features a boss gauntlet introduced in an update, offering even more brutal challenges for players seeking the ultimate test.

4. Devil May Cry 3

The original version of Devil May Cry 3 is one of the hardest games of all time. The enemies were relentless, capable of killing Dante in just a few hits, even on easy mode. The bosses were particularly brutal, as getting hit was nearly inevitable for casual players. One attack on normal difficulty could take away almost half of Dante’s health, causing a lot of frustration.

The developers toned down the game’s difficulty with the release of the Special Edition, which also introduced Vergil as a playable character. This release marks one of the rare instances where the developers officially nerfed the entire game’s difficulty.

5. Cuphead

Cuphead is a 2D run-and-gun game that is considered one of the hardest video games of all time. One of the main reasons is the intense boss fights, which many players have compared to those found in the Souls series. Like Souls games, Cuphead is difficult but fair. As a player, if you practice, learn boss patterns, and adapt, you will eventually overcome each challenge.

Players can also level up their characters and equip different weapons, adding some elements of roleplaying to Cuphead.
