Atsu is the protagonist of Ghost of Yotei and the spiritual successor of Jin Sakai. Here’s everything we know about her so far.

After Sucker Punch Production’s 2020 hit release Ghost of Tsushima, gamers were eagerly waiting for a sequel. However, to everyone’s surprise, the developers came back with another standalone title set in the same franchise, Ghost of Yotei. Instead of a continuation of Jin Sakai’s story from the previous games, fans have a new protagonist, or “Ghost,” named Atsu. She is a female ronin on a quest for vengeance in 1603 Japan.
Sucker Punch has shown Atsu in action in the announcement and The Onryō’s List trailer. However, information regarding Atsu’s character still largely remains shrouded in mystery. In this article, we will tell you everything about Atsu that we know so far.
Everything We Know About Atsu in Ghost of Yotei

Sucker Punch Productions have confirmed that Ghost of Yotei is Tsushima’s spiritual successor, and by extension Atsu is Jin’s. Many might feel upset that Sakai’s story ended with the first game. But despite having a different protagonist, the Ghost persona remains as the core theme, and feudal Japan as the setting in the sequel. Additionally, the developers have said that Atsu’s story focuses on a tale of vengeance.
As seen in the trailers, the new female protagonist is a ronin, and she is on a journey to exact revenge against six individuals who murdered her family. So far, there’s a lot of discussion on social media and public forums regarding Atsu’s lineage. The consensus is that she is of Ainu descent, since an Ainu character was believed to be seen in the recent trailer.
According to historical facts, the Ainu were the indigenous people of Northern Feudal Japan and were subjects of discrimination during the Edo Period. So, it is certainly a possibility that Ghost of Yotei and Atsu’s story will explore these aspects. However, other fans have also claimed that Atsu might be a descendant of Jin’s. This would connect the two games to a certain degree and add a layer of familiarity. Still, both theories are largely based on speculation.
Atsu Is Going To Be an Underdog in Ghost of Yotei

The developers have previously stated that Atsu’s journey in Ghost of Yotei is going to be an “underdog story.” This, mixed with her being a female ronin in feudal Japan, adds yet another layer of complexity to Atsu’s character. Many historical accounts confirm the presence of female samurai in 1603 Japan, named “Onna-musha.”
However, people rarely saw this particular class of warriors because most women during the Edo Period filled defensive roles, such as protecting their homes and families. So, this aspect of Atsu’s character might play a significant role in the story and the gameplay.
Other than that, since revenge stories often explore the themes of moral ambiguity, violent acts, and morally gray characters, Atsu might prove to be quite a complex and layered character, even surpassing Jin Sakai. Jin adopted the Ghost persona and betrayed his samurai code to ultimately protect the people of Japan, and many might consider this act to be noble. However, since Atsu’s character arc is going to be centered around revenge, it makes her choices and actions more personal, which might not be entirely noble or righteous.
Conclusion
Lastly, despite carrying the same name, Ghost of Yotei is its own standalone game, and Atsu is a different protagonist. From what we have seen so far, the sequel is going to broaden the scope of the core themes, shift the narrative, and challenge the definition of the “Ghost.” While the previous title was about Jin’s struggle between honor and duty, Atsu’s internal and external conflicts could largely be tied to her vengeance, identity, and moral ambiguity.
