In Stardew Valley, as you keep progressing through the game, you gain experience across various skills. Foraging is one such skill that is related to collecting materials and resources from the wild. Additionally, as you keep progressing through skill levels, you get to unlock a profession, which is directly related to the said skill. Foraging branches into two professions: Forester and Gatherer.

Foraging Professions in Stardew Valley

Every skill in Stardew Valley has a level cap of 10. You get two choices each at Level 5 and Level 10. In Foraging, you get to choose either Forester or Gatherer upon reaching Level 5. Here are the benefits of these professions and their upgrades:
- Forester: You get 25% more wood from chopping trees, including stumps and logs.
- Lumberjack: All trees have a chance to drop hardwood.
- Tapper: Syrups are worth 25% more.
- Gatherer: There’s a 20% chance to double your foraged harvest.
- Botanist: All foraged items are of the highest quality.
- Tracker: The Location of the forageable items is revealed.
As you can see, choosing either profession at Level 5 can vastly change how you obtain forageable items in Stardew Valley. So, which one is the better choice?
Forester or Gatherer in Stardew Valley
The Gatherer profession remains the best simply because it can later be upgraded to Botanist. With Iridium quality items, you can earn lots of money by turning them into wine. However, it does not mean that Forester isn’t useful at all.
We recommend choosing the Forester profession at first because the extra amount of wood can be immensely helpful in the early game. However, once you have nothing more to build, you can switch to Gatherer using the Statue of Uncertainty in the Sewers. This way, you can start focusing on earning money, which you need a lot of in the endgame.
