Everything you need to know about Elden Ring Nightreign’s offline modes, including how to play, restrictions, difficulty balancing, and more.

Elden Ring Nightreign is far from the contemporary “souls-like” experiences out there. In fact, it’s a completely different experience from anything FromSoftware has created to date. The game does use Elden Ring as its foundation, however, at the same time, it does so many things differently that it cannot be classified as a DLC. Unlike the original Elden Ring, Nightreign is a multiplayer-focused game. The game’s progression, as well as enemy and boss encounters, are designed with multiplayer as the primary focus. That being said, if you want, you can still play the game like any other single-player souls-like, albeit with some major restrictions and caveats.
Furthermore, thanks to the game’s “solo mode,” it can be played offline as well, from start to finish. However, playing the game offline is a bit tricky, since it defaults to the online mode right from the start. Here’s everything you need to know about Elden Ring Nightreign’s offline mode, including its restrictions, balancing, and more.
How To Enable Offline Mode in Elden Ring Nightreign

Unlike the online single-player mode, the offline mode can only be activated from the game’s main menu. You cannot toggle between online and offline modes from the Expeditions menu. Basically, when you boot the game up, head to the Gameplay options under System. Under Gameplay, select Launch options as Offline. After doing so, simply quit the game and restart it. This will boot you directly into the game’s offline mode. The offline mode, as expected, limits you to just the single-player Expeditions. Unlike the original Elden Ring, you cannot summon NPCs to help you in solo mode here. Instead, the game scales down the difficulty of single-player by reducing enemy health.
Furthermore, in single-player mode, you obtain more Runes for killing enemies, which should help you level up much faster. However, apart from a boost in Rune acquisition and reduced enemy HP, everything else is static across both multiplayer and single-player. You will still get ambushed by multiple enemies, and even some of the bosses will retain their multiple forms, a la Gladius, who can split into three separate entities during its boss fight.
Is Elden Ring Nightreign Worth Playing Offline and Solo?

Elden Ring Nightreign is a game designed to be played in co-op. While you can technically play through the entirety of it in single-player, it’s not really meant to be played that way. Think of it like playing an extraction shooter or looter-shooter like Destiny 2 in solo mode. Yes, you can play those games solo, but it’s not the ideal experience. Also, the end rewards for completing an Expedition do not scale based on whether you were playing in solo or multiplayer mode. Instead, it’s scaled based on how far you progressed in said Expedition. Playing solo can be very difficult, and outside of challenge runs, it’s not really worth it.
