EA has cancelled Marvel’s Black Panther title and shut Cliffhanger Games down. Here’s everything you need to know.

Electronic Arts has cancelled their upcoming Black Panther project and has shut down the developer, Cliffhanger Games. The title was revealed in 2023 and was said to be part of a three-game deal between EA and Marvel Games. Many fans were eager to see this iteration of the protector of Wakanda and how much it differed from Azzuri in Skydance’s Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, set during World War 2.
However, according to a memo from the president of EA Entertainment, Laura Miele, it seems like fans will never be able to experience the modern-day Black Panther game.

According to recent reports, Cliffhanger Games has officially shut down alongside their projects, including the Black Panther title. The EA Entertainment President, Laura Miele, stated in an email to her staff that they took such measures to
“sharpen our focus and put our creative energy behind the most significant growth opportunities.”
However, Cliffhanger Games isn’t the only one at the receiving end of the axe, as EA has confirmed to also be laying off employees from its central and mobile teams. We do not have the specifics regarding the number of individuals who lost their jobs. But it is reportedly less than the previous 300 layoffs in April. “These decisions are hard,” further added Miele. She also said
“They affect people we’ve worked with, learned from, and shared real moments with. We’re doing everything we can to support them, including finding opportunities within EA, where we’ve had success helping people land in new roles.”
According to the email, EA is currently focusing on proven and successful IPs such as The Sims, Skate, Battlefield, and Apex Legends. Additionally, Laura Miele has also stated that Motive’s Iron Man title is still in development alongside BioWare’s next installment in the Mass Effect franchise and Respawn’s third game in the Star Wars Jedi series. Also, as per reports, these changes won’t affect EA’s sports games division in any shape or form.
Black Panther Game’s Progress Remains Unknown

Kevin Stephens was in charge of Cliffhanger Games. He worked at Monolith Productions previously, where he contributed to projects like Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War. Other than that, Cliffhanger also had various developers who worked on big franchises such as Call of Duty, Halo, God of War, etc.
To this day, we do not know how much progress the Black Panther title made in Cliffhanger Games. EA announced both the game and the studio back in 2023. The game was said to be “still in early development with a long road ahead” during that time. Furthermore, the studio planned to set Black Panther during modern times. According to rumors, it also had plans to feature branching storylines and African martial arts. Overall, the developer and EA reportedly said that the game was going to be an authentic and definitive Black Panther experience.
