Gaping Jaw (Adel, Baron of Night), the second Nightlord that you unlock after defeating Tricephalos, is easily one of the hardest bosses in Elden Ring Nightreign. Despite being positioned right after Tricephalos, Gaping Jaw is significantly more difficult than most bosses in the game, including the final one.

While the beast’s moveset is fairly simplistic, its ability to dish out tremendous amounts of damage and quickly recover from stagger makes it a force to be reckoned with. In addition to all that, Adel, Baron of Night, also has a ton of health, and even with Bleed, it can take a lot of time to whittle down the boss’s HP bar, while also trying to survive the creature’s onslaught of attacks.

Thankfully, there are plenty of ways to reduce the difficulty of the battle, be it with elemental weapons or with the right party composition. Here’s a comprehensive guide on how to easily defeat Adel, Baron of Night, i.e., the Gaping Jaw in Elden Ring Nightreign.

Adel, Baron of Night, is available to fight right after you defeat Gladius (Tricephalos) for the very first time. It’s basically a Dragon-like creature that seems to have been born of the Night, and is now hell-bent on consuming anything that comes in its path. Although the monster’s design is very similar to Dark Souls‘ Gaping Dragon, it’s a vastly different creature.

Firstly, unlike the Gaping Dragon, Adel is incredibly agile and has access to the lightning element. Furthermore, the boss is heavily armored across its entire body, with only its head and hindlimbs being the weak points. And lastly, Adel, Baron of Night, unlike the Gaping Dragon, is weak to Poison.

In fact, if you have weapons with the Poison element, you can easily overpower the boss, albeit only in the first phase. Inflicting Poison essentially staggers the boss temporarily, reducing its defenses. However, once it transitions to its second phase, Adel gains increased immunity to Poison, which significantly increases the difficulty of the battle.

Additionally, unlike some of the other Nightlords, Adel is quite hard to stagger. The boss is incredibly agile, and unless you’re using Recluse or Ironeye, you won’t get too many chances to deal damage to it.

Adel is primarily weak to Poison, at least that’s what the game tells you. However, during our testing, we found that Bleed was the most effective element against the boss. You can also easily overpower the boss with Scarlet Rot or Frostbite. However, poisoning the Gaping Jaw does give you brief opportunities to dish out damage, which is useful in the first phase.

In the second phase, you won’t be able to inflict Poison on the boss. This is due to the increased agility as well as poison resistance in the second phase. Apart from elemental damage, Adel can also be stance-broken; however, to do so, you will need Colossal Weapons and passive buffs for increased poise damage.

As such, if you want to go melee against the boss, the best choices of Nightfarers are Raider or Wylder.

Here are some tips that should help you easily defeat the Gaping Jaw in Elden Ring Nightreign:

  • At the start of the battle, Adel always does a 3-hit ground slam combo. As such, it’s best to keep your distance from the boss at the start. However, if you have your character skill and ultimate arts gauge maxed out, we recommend heading straight to the boss and using them. You get I-frames while performing a skill or an ultimate.
  • If you’re using poison, make sure to keep an eye on the boss’s HP bar. Once Adel is poisoned, we recommend staying at a medium distance as poisoning forces Adel to vomit a poisonous substance, which, while it staggers the boss, can also eat away at your own HP.
  • With a ranged character in the party, you can constantly apply Poison on the boss, while tanks and melee characters can keep it distracted. The best party composition for the Gaping Jaw is Raider, Guardian, and Ironeye. You can replace Guardian with Wylder; however, make sure to have at least 2 tanks in your party.
  • Also, while locking onto Adel, keep the camera on the boss’s limbs, instead of its head or body. Additionally, always keep an eye on Adel’s head. If the boss’s head retracts, unlock the camera and run to a medium distance. This essentially is a telegraph for the boss’s grab attack, which also causes Blood Loss.
  • Lastly, when you see Adel summoning lightning, simply head to the edge of the arena as fast as you can. Staying close to the boss while it summons the lightning shower can easily deplete your HP bar in the blink of an eye. You can also use Guardian’s shield or Raider’s totem to avoid getting hit by the lightning AOE.

Additional Notes

You can also go with Raider, Revenant, and Recluse as the party composition. While it might not look like it, Revenant can also tank bosses just as efficiently as Raider or Wylder. However, it’s a character that has a significantly higher skill ceiling than other Nightfarers.
